Rauf Məmmədov (or Mamedov , also Mamedow ; born April 26, 1988 in Baku ) is an Azerbaijani chess player .

Career

He became international champion in 2003 and has been a grandmaster since 2004. In August 2004 he became U16 European champion in Ürgüp . He was able to win the Azerbaijani individual championship three times: in March 2006, in January 2008 and in January 2015. All three championships were held in Baku. He took part in the World Chess Cup three times ( 2007 , 2009 and 2011 ), but failed in the first round. On December 1, 2006, he had a lightning rating of 3564 on the ICC server . In 2015 he won the European championship in lightning chess in Minsk . In 2016 he again took part in the European Blitz Championship, which took place in Tallinn , and finished third behind Alexander Ryazantsev and Maxim Matlakov . In 2020 he finished third at the Aeroflot Open in Moscow, tied with the winner Aydin Suleymanli .

Rauf Məmmədov has been married to the Ukrainian International Master (IM) and Chess Grandmaster for Women (WGM) Natalija Buksa since 2018 .

National team

For the Azerbaijani national team he took part in six Chess Olympiads : 2004 , 2006 and 2008 on the first reserve board, 2010 on the third, 2012 on the fourth and 2014 again on the third board with an overall result of +19 = 22 −10. At two European team championships , 2007 and 2009, he also played on the reserve board. He had a result of +3 = 5 −0. In 2007 Azerbaijan took third place and won the European Team Championship in 2009. In 2013 in Warsaw , the team became European champions again, this time with Rauf Məmmədov on the fourth board. At the 2010 team world championships he played on the first reserve board and had a result of +1 = 4 −1. In 2011 he played on the third board and in 2013 on the first board. At the European Team Championship 2017, Azerbaijan won again, with Rauf Məmmədov playing on the fourth board and achieving a result of +7 = 2 −0. This made the strongest player of all nations on his board. In the important team fight against the Russians, who ended up in second place, he achieved an important victory against the Russian grandmaster Daniil Dubow with the white pieces .

He regularly plays club chess on board 1 for Eczacıbaşı Istanbul in Turkish leagues, from 2008 in Spain for Servigar Binissalem and from 2009 for Alkaloid Skopje in the Macedonian 1st league. At the European Club Cup he played for Eczacıbaşı Istanbul in 2005 , for Alkaloid Skopje in 2009 , for SOCAR Azerbaijan in 2010 and 2011 and for Odlar Yurdu in 2013 and 2014 . In the Russian team championship in 2013 he played for the team of the Belorechensk University .
