Chess World Cup 2007

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 2007 World Chess Cup (officially: FIDE World Cup 2007 ) took place from November 24th to December 16th in Khanty-Mansiysk , Russia , and served as a qualification stage for the 2010 World Chess Championship .

128 chess players who had previously qualified through national and international qualifications took part in the tournament, which was played in the cup system . The US-American Gata Kamsky won the competition undefeated, he only had to go into the tiebreak once , and defeated Alexei Schirow 2.5: 1.5 in the final over four games . With his victory, Kamsky qualified for the candidate final against Wesselin Topalow . The winner (Topalow) won the right to challenge world champion Viswanathan Anand .

Two 17 year old players, Sergey Karjakin and Magnus Carlsen , reached the semifinals.

The four semi-finalists were given access to the FIDE Grand Prix 2008/09 , which was a qualification stage for the 2012 World Cup .

Prominent non-participating players

Vladimir Kramnik and Wesselin Topalow could not take part because they already enjoyed privileges in the current World Cup cycle, which still resulted from their participation in the 2006 World Chess Championship , which ended the division of the World Cup title in two. All other leading grandmasters, including world champion Anand; were eligible to participate, but Anand waived.

Three other players who had recently taken part in the 2007 World Cup in Mexico - Péter Lékó , Alexander Morozevich and Boris Gelfand - did not take part either. Lékó and Morozevich refused to attend because of the privileges granted to Kramnik and Topalow. As the only other player from the top 30 in the world rankings, Judit Polgár did not take part.

conditions

The tournament took place under similar conditions as the controversial FIDE knockout world championships 1998-2004 : Each round consisted of two games per pairing, only in the final there were four games. If no decision has been made after the regular games, tie breaks with a shorter reflection period were provided.

The time controls for the regular games were 90 minutes for the first 20 moves and an additional 30 minutes for the remainder of the game, adding 30 seconds per move. The tiebreaks consisted of two quick games (25 minutes per player + 10 seconds per move); if necessary, two more blitz games (5 minutes + 10 seconds per move); if it was still a tie, a single game would have decided whether or not to advance, with White having 6 minutes and Black 5 minutes. If there was a draw, Black would continue.

Prize money ranged from $ 6,000 (for players eliminated in the first round), $ 80,000 for the losing finalist, and $ 120,000 for the winner.
