Michail Naumowitsch Gurewitsch (originally Russian Михаил Наумович Гуревич , scientific transliteration: Michail Naumovič Gurevič ; born February 22, 1959 in Charkow ) is a chess master with roots in the Soviet Union . Gurevich has been representing Belgium since September 2015 .

Career

Gurevich won the USSR championship in 1985 and was awarded the FIDE grandmaster title in 1986 . In 1991 he took up residence in Belgium and has since preferred the English spelling of his name, Mikhail Gurevich . Gurevich has belonged to the extended world elite since the late 1980s, and from 1988 to the end of 1991 he was among the top ten players in seven of eight semi-annual Elo world rankings. He was for a time analysis partners and Sekundant of Viswanathan Anand . December 1988 he was divided first in Belgrade together with Psachis and Polugajewski . Gurewitsch won the Reggio nell'Emilia tournament at the turn of 1988/89, Moscow 1990 and the Kocaeli Open in 2002. At the European Championships in Batumi in 2002, he came third.

In 2001 he took part in the Belgian championship (in Charleroi ) for the first time and became national champion, scoring 100% (9 out of 9) of the possible points. Differences with the Belgian Chess Federation, however, meant that Gurevich represented Turkey from 2005 to 2015. At the end of 2005 he had a great sporting success at the FIDE World Cup in Khanty-Mansiysk : He made it into the top eight and thus qualified for the re-introduced candidates' tournament . There he was defeated by Péter Lékó in the first round. In March 2006 he won the Turkish national championship in Istanbul before Suat Atalık . Since 2006 he has held the title of FIDE Senior Trainer .

His best placement in the world rankings was fifth, which he shared with Valery Salov in January 1990 , and in January 1991 with Yevgeny Bareev and Jaan Ehlvest .

Gurevich took part in three Chess Olympiads , 1992 with the Belgian team, 2006 and 2008 with the Turkish team. In 1989 Gurevich won with the Soviet team both the European team championship and the world team championship , in 2007 he also took part in the European team championship with the Turkish team.

In the German Federal Chess League Gurewitsch played from 1991 to 1994 for SV 03/25 Koblenz , from 1999 to 2002 for Godesberger SK and from 2002 to 2006 for SG Porz , with which he became German team champion in 2004 . In the British Four Nations Chess League (4NCL) Gurevich played from 1997 to 2000 for Slough and in the 2005/06 season at Guildford A&DC . He was British team champion in 1999 and 2000 . The Dutch team championship ( Hoofdklasse until 1996 , since then Meesterklasse ) won Gurewitsch with De Variant Breda in 1996 , 1997 , 1998 , 1999 , 2000 , 2001 , 2002 , 2003 and 2006 . In the French National I or Top 16 he played from 2001 to 2008 at Club de Orcher la Tour Gonfreville and in 2019 for Asnières - Le Grand Echiquier . Gurewitsch won the Belgian team championship in 2005 and 2006 with KSK 47 Eynatten and in 2009 with Schachfreunde Wirtzfeld ; in the 2016/17 season he played for Cercle des Echecs de Charleroi . He was Luxembourg team champion in 2010 with Cercle d'échecs Dudelange , he also played for Le Cavalier Differdange . In the Spanish team championship he played from 2002 to 2005 and again in 2007 for CA La Caja Las Palmas .

At the European Club Cup Gurevich took between 1990 and 2005 some nine times. In the team competition he won in 1998 with De Variant Breda and in 2000 also reached third place with Breda , in the individual competition he won in 2000 on the fourth board.
