He represented Turkey at the 1984 , 1986 , 1988 , 1992 , 1994 and 1998 Chess Olympiads . In 2000, after disputes with the Turkish Chess Federation, he wanted to strengthen the national team of Bosnia and Herzegovina , but FIDE refused him participation for formal reasons. At the Olympics in 2002 and 2004, however, he played for the South Slavic country. In 2006, however, he fought for Turkey again.

In 2006, after a long period of abstinence, he took part in the Turkish championship in Istanbul, where he finished second behind the elected Turk Mikhail Gurevich . In 2007 he won the Turkish individual championship for the third time after 1987 and 1988.

In 2007 he won the 4th Mediterranean Championship in Cannes after ranking ahead of Manuel Apicella . In 2012 he was banned from the Turkish Chess Federation for 15 months. Atalık had refused to sign a declaration obliging Turkish players to have the chess federation approve foreign assignments beforehand. After the Greek Chess Federation took over this ban, he played a match against his wife in Chalkida , Greece , in August 2012 , which he won with 9.5: 4.5.

He has been married to the Russian women's grandmaster Jekaterina Polownikowa (* 1982) since November 2005 . Atalık is in sixth place (as of January 2015) in the Turkish Elo ranking, which he led from January 1987 to January 2000.
