Aleksandar Matanović ( Serbian - Cyrillic Александар Матановић ; born May 23, 1930 in Belgrade ) is a Serbian grandmaster in chess . He is the editor of the chess informator .
Chess player
Aleksandar Matanović won the Yugoslav youth championship at the age of 18. 1962 shared with ( Dragoljub Minić ), 1969 and 1978 he won the championship of Yugoslavia. Further successes were his victories in the tournaments Opatija 1953 and Hamburg 1955. He took part in the chess Olympiads in 1954 in Amsterdam , 1956 in Moscow , 1958 in Munich , 1960 in Leipzig , 1962 in Varna , 1964 in Tel Aviv , 1966 in Havana , 1968 in Lugano , 1970 in Siegen , 1972 in Skopje , 1974 in Nice and 1978 in Buenos Aires . In 1956, 1958, 1962, 1964 and 1968 he reached second place with the team, in 1970 he won the individual ranking on the fourth board. He took part in European team championships five times , finishing second in 1957, 1961 , 1965 and 1973 and third in 1977.
In 1951 FIDE awarded him the title of International Master , and in 1955 he became a Grand Master.
He is listed as inactive by FIDE as he has not played an Elo rated game since 1986 . Before the introduction of the Elo numbers, its highest historical Elo number was 2698 in October 1956.

In 1966, Matanović published the magazine Schachinformator for the first time , a globally recognized collection of 600 to 700 current, important chess games. From 1974 he published the encyclopedia of chess openings, a standard work in the field of chess.
