The 19th Chess Olympiad in 1970 was held from September 5 to 27, 1970 in Siegen ( Federal Republic of Germany ).

Overview

60 teams took part, who determined the teams for the final groups A to E in six preliminary groups. 360 players (including 35 Grand Masters and 66 International Masters) took part in the competition. Round tournaments were held both in the opening groups and in the final groups . The first two teams in each opening group qualified for final group A. The tournament director was Willi Fohl from Germany. Harry de Graaf from the Netherlands acted as the main referee . The Chess Olympiad took place in the Siegerlandhalle . The thinking time was 40 moves in 150 minutes, then one hour for 16 moves each time. The placement was determined based on the board points (BP) and team points (MP). For the first time, teams from Japan, New Zealand and Rhodesia as well as from the Faroe Islands and the island of Guernsey were represented at a Chess Olympiad.

Albania did not face South Africa because of political reservations. The game was rated 4-0 for the South Africans without a fight.
