István Csom (born June 2, 1940 in Sátoraljaújhely , † July 28, 2021 ) was a Hungarian chess player and referee.

Life

He received the FIDE title International Master in 1967 and the Grand Master title in 1973. From 1991 he was also the official international referee of FIDE. The Hungarian Chess Federation awarded the Maróczy Prize in 2005. In the same year he received the Officer's Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit .

In 1972 and 1973 (divided) he became Hungarian champion. He won tournaments in for example Amsterdam (1969), Olot (1973), Cleveland and the zone tournament in Pula (1975), as well as Hanover (1976), Berlin (1979), Copenhagen (1983), Järvenpää (1985) and Delhi (1987) ). At the Senior World Cup in 2001 in Arco , Italy , he finished second behind Jānis Klovāns .

As a coach he trained Ferenc Berkes .

Team chess

National team

Csom took part in nine Chess Olympiads with the Hungarian team between 1968 and 1988 . He won the 1978 Chess Olympiad , he also achieved second places in 1970 , 1972 and 1980 and in 1980 also achieved the best individual result on the fourth board.

At the 1985 World Team Championships in Lucerne , he took second place with the Hungarian team, and he himself achieved the second-best individual result on the first reserve board. Between 1970 and 1992 Csom took part in six European team championships . With the team he reached three second and two third places, in 1973 he won the individual ranking on the fifth board.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Csom played for Spartacus Budapest , with whom he participated six times in the European Club Cup and won it in 1982, later for the ASE Paks . In the Austrian league, Csom played for Stein / Steyr until the 2001/02 season, and for Kremsmünster since the 2007/08 season ; in German club chess, he last played for the Preetz TSV in the 2001/02 season.
