János Flesch (born September 30, 1933 in Budapest , † December 9, 1983 in Whitstable , England) was a Hungarian chess player.
Life
On October 16, 1960, Flesch set a world record in blind simul play in Budapest . In 52 games he played 18 draws and only lost three games. He claimed to have even played blind against 62 players in 1970. But this was not generally recognized, especially since the games of this event were not published.
In 1963 he received the title of International Master and in 1980 he became a Grand Master . He was also the author of several chess books .
With the Hungarian national team, Flesch took part in the 1964 Chess Olympiad in Tel Aviv and the 1965 European Team Championship in Hamburg , where he and the team took third place and at the same time achieved the third-best individual result on the ninth board.
In 1976 he finished second behind Oleg Romanishin at the Dortmund Chess Days . Flesch played his last tournament in 1983 in Ramsgate . Between the individual games he drove to London to get a German visa because he wanted to give several simultaneous events in Germany .
On December 9, 1983, there was an accident in which the car driven by his wife crashed into a truck in Whitstable. János Flesch died on the spot, his wife died a few hours later in Canterbury hospital from her serious injuries. The Flesch couple left behind a son and a daughter (both minors).
Before the Elo numbers were introduced, Flesch's highest historical Elo number was 2566 in April 1967.
