Peter Dely

Péter Dely (born July 5, 1934 in Sárospatak ; † December 29, 2012 ) was a Hungarian chess master .

Dely became International Master in 1962 and Honorary Grand Master in 1999 . He was one of the strongest Hungarian players in the 1960s and 1970s and won the Hungarian National Championship in 1969. For the Hungarian national team, Dely took part twice in the European team championship , with the team he won silver in 1970 and bronze in 1965.

Dely won or occupied top places in several tournaments: 1st place in Reggio nell'Emilia (1960/61), I-II. Place in Polanica-Zdrój (1965), 1st place in Budapest (1967), 1st place in Bagneux (1970) and I-II. Place in Luxembourg (1971).

Dely had his best Elo rating of 2480 from July 1971 to July 1973. His last Elo rating was 2391, but he has not been active since 2000. Before the Elo rating was introduced, it had its best historical rating of 2584 in January 1971 .

In his game with Black against Károly Honfi in the Hungarian championship in 1965, Dely tried a pawn sacrifice for the first time in the Taimanow variant of the Sicilian Defense. This move became famous when Garry Kasparov played it with success against Anatoly Karpov in two games at the 1985 World Chess Championship . Nowadays the variant is often called Kasparov-Dely-Gambit after both players .
