István Bilek (born August 11, 1932 in Budapest , † March 20, 2010 ) was a Hungarian chess player and chess journalist.

István Bilek won the Hungarian national championship in 1962, 1964 and 1970. In 1958 he received the title of International Master from FIDE and in 1962 that of Grand Master .

It is said that he did not play with the ultimate consequence and that he was also easily short of time . Nevertheless, he could show successes. So he finished in 1964 at the zone tournament in Kecskemét a shared 2nd place and at the turn of the year 1964/65 also won the tournament in Reggio nell'Emilia .

With the Hungarian team he was third (3rd board) at the Chess Olympiad in Havana in 1966 , second in Siegen (3rd board) in 1970 and also second (2nd board) in Skopje in 1972 . In Skopje he also managed a remarkable victory over Viktor Korchnoi . From 1958 to 1974 he played nine times for Hungary at the Chess Olympiads, winning silver in 1962 (on the 3rd board) and 1972 and bronze in the individual rankings in 1966. He also took part with Hungary in the finals of the European Team Championships in 1961, 1965, 1970 and 1973, where he finished second in 1970, third in 1961, 1965 and 1973 respectively. He played club chess for Honvéd Budapest , most recently in the 2001/02 season

Bilek was also committed to the father of the successful Polgar sisters. The Hungarian Chess Federation wanted László Polgár to be declared crazy and to send his daughters to a home. Bilek prevented that.
