The 15th Chess Olympiad in 1962 was held from September 6th to October 10th, 1962 in Varna ( Bulgaria ).

Overview

37 teams took part and determined the teams for the final groups A to C in four preliminary groups. 220 players (including 31 Grand Masters and 37 International Masters) took part in the competition. Round tournaments were held in the opening groups as well as in the final groups A and B , final group C in the Swiss system (11 rounds). The first three teams in each support group qualified for the final group A. With Turkey and Cyprus there were two debutants.

The main referee was Salomon Flohr from the Soviet Union . The thinking time was 40 moves in 150 minutes, then one hour for 16 moves each time. The placement was determined based on the board points (BP), team points (MP) and the direct comparison.

The best German participant was Wolfgang Uhlmann , who achieved fourth place on the first board.
