Chess Olympiad 1926

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1926 Chess Olympiad was a small team tournament organized by the World Chess Federation FIDE, founded in 1924, at its congress in Budapest , which took place in July 1926 . It was first played according to Olympic chess rules. Four players per team were allowed, and all teams had to compete against each other in a round- robin tournament.

Results

In allusion to the heat wave during the tournament, the chess world jokingly spoke of the “steam bath tournament”. The German team ended up in last place. For the German Chess Federation , however, the tournament was associated with a sport-political success. A little later, Germany , which was seen as the cause of the war , was allowed to join FIDE and thus participate in the first official Chess Olympiad in 1927.

Otto Rüster (1949)

The German team was made up of the players Bruno Moritz, Wilhelm Schönmann , Gottlieb Machate and Otto Rüster. These did not belong to the top group of German chess masters. In their 12 games at the Olympics, only four draws, no victory.

The teams from Austria and Czechoslovakia canceled before the tournament began.

The first FIDE championship tournament with 16 participants took place at the same congress. Ernst Grünfeld and Mario Monticelli , who drew against each other, were ahead with 9.5 points each, with Grünfeld taking first place thanks to a better Berger rating . Other prominent players such as Akiba Rubinstein , Hans Kmoch , Richard Réti , Savielly Tartakower and Frederick Dewhurst Yates were in the starting field . Edith Holloway won the women's tournament . The Open was won by the Hungarian Sandor Zinner .
