The 1st Women's Chess Olympiad took place from September 2nd to 21st, 1957 in Emmen ( Netherlands ).

Overview

21 teams with a total of 43 players, including one IM ( international men's master ) and 15 international female champions, took part in the competition. The 21 teams initially played in three preliminary groups, with the first three teams qualifying for final group A. Both the opening groups and the final groups were held as round-robin tournaments. Only two players were allowed per team, i.e. without a substitute player. The cooling off time was two and a half hours for 40 trains. The placement was determined based on the board points (BP), team points (MP), the direct comparison and a special Berger rating (SB).

The Olympics took place in the club room of the Danlon works. The organizing committee was chaired by HKG Bartstra from the Netherlands. Albéric O'Kelly de Galway from Belgium acted as main referee. De Graaf (Netherlands) was the tournament director.
