Bobby Fischer against world champion Michail Tal at the Chess Olympiad
The Ringmessehaus, the venue for the Chess Olympiad (spring fair 1961)
The 14th Chess Olympiad took place from October 26th to November 9th 1960 in Leipzig (then GDR ).
Overview
40 teams took part, including for the first time Albania, Monaco and Indonesia. 232 players took part in the competition, including 26 grandmasters and 37 international champions. The only woman participating was Anne Marie Renoy-Chevrier . The teams for the final groups A to C were determined in four preliminary groups. The first three teams in each preliminary group qualified for final group A, the next three for B, and the rest was C. Both the preliminary groups and final groups A and B (12 teams each) were played as round-robin tournaments, final group C (16 teams ) in the Swiss system (eleven rounds).
The game was played in the Ring-Messehaus . The chief organizers were Johannes Dieckmann (chairman of the organizing committee) and Herbert R. Grätz (chairman of the executive committee) from the GDR. Vyacheslav Ragosin from the Soviet Union acted as the main referee . The reflection time was 150 minutes for 40 trains, then one hour for 16 trains each time. The placements were determined based on the board points (BP) and team points (MP).
During the Chess Olympiad, an international exhibition Chess through the Ages took place in the City History Museum , for which an exhibition catalog was also published.
