Born in Carinthia, Robatsch came to Graz as a student at the age of 17 . He was often to be found in the Café Berghaus, the meeting place for the Graz chess players. At the Chess Olympiad in Leipzig in 1960 , he received the gold medal for the best result on the first board (13.5 points from 16 games). Because of this achievement, he was awarded the title of Grand Master in 1961 . In June 1960 he won the Austrian state championship in Prein .

Karl Robatsch also made a name for himself as a chess theorist. He played a major role in the development of the Pirc Ufimzew Defense and the Modern Defense , also known as the Robach Defense .

Robatsch's last Elo number was 2349. Before the introduction of the Elo numbers, his best historical Elo number was 2653. He reached this in April 1961.

About half of them were later placed as a subspecies or variety to other species. In 2003 a new species was named Epipactis robatschiana Bartolo, D'Emerico, Pulv., Terrasi & Stuto in his honor. The following list is a compilation of these new descriptions, any later reclassifications and the countries of origin of the type plants :
