Dawit Schengelia ( Georgian დავით შენგელია , at the World Chess Federation FIDE David Shengelia ; born March 6, 1980 in Tbilisi ) is an Austrian chess player of Georgian origin.

Life

Dawit Schengelia grew up in Georgia, where he graduated from the Academy for Physical Education and Sports as a sports teacher with a focus on chess. He studies business administration in Vienna and is a chess trainer at the Vienna chess school. He now has Austrian citizenship. Since March 2009, as the successor to Egon Brestian, he has been the national trainer of the Austrian Chess Federation with the tasks of coordinating top-class chess and training the women's national team. Dawit Schengelia had trained the German women's national team at the 2008 Chess Olympiad in Dresden on the initiative of Elisabeth Pähtz , with whom he played at SC Kreuzberg . Since May 2009 he has been playing for the Austrian Chess Federation .

With the Georgian U16 national team, he took part in the U16 Olympiad in 1995 in the Canary Islands. The team took second place. In March 2003 he won the 1st invitation tournament of the Yerevan Chess Academy . In 2005 he won the Open in Cappelle-la-Grande in February together with Mychajlo Brodskyj , and in September the 12th International Open in Graz . The International Chess Open in Oberwart he won in July 2006. In September 2006 he won the re- International Open in Graz. In April 2007 he won the Castle Open in Werther (Westphalia) , in August 2008 the 16th International Open in Wattens and in December 2009 the 18th Danube Open in Aschach an der Donau . He won the Austrian state championship in July 2012 in Zwettl-Niederösterreich and in September 2015 in Pinkafeld .

Since May 2005 he has held the title of Grand Master . He achieved the norms for this at the European individual championship in 2002 in Batumi (over-fulfillment with 7.5 out of 12), at the Open in Cappelle-la-Grande in 2005 (over-fulfillment with 7.5 out of 9) and in the Austrian 2. Bundesliga middle in the 2004/05 season for the second team of Styria Graz . In February 2015, Schengelia ranks second behind Markus Ragger in the Austrian Elo ranking.

National team

With the Austrian national team, Dawit Schengelia took part in the Chess Olympiads 2010 , 2012 and 2014 as well as the European Team Championships in 2009, 2011 and 2013.

He played club chess in Georgia until the early 2000s. In Germany he played since the 2003/04 season for the East Westphalian club SK Werther , in the 2008/09 season in the German Chess League for SC Kreuzberg . In Austria he played since the 2004/05 season in the Bundesliga for Styria Graz , with which he won the Austrian State Championship in 2006 and took part in the European Club Cup in the same year , locally for Vienna-Währing and company chess for Nuschei Spezialdichtungen Vienna . From the 2009/10 season to the 2013/14 season he was active in Austria for SK Advisory Invest Baden . He also won the Austrian team championship with Baden in 2012 and took part in the European Club Cup twice. From the 2014/15 season to the 2018/19 season he played for SK Sparkasse Jenbach and became champions with them in 2015 and 2018 . In Spain he played in 2008 for CE Barberà , in Hungary from 2009 to 2011 for Szombathelyi MÁV Haladás Vasutas Sportegyesület ; since 2017 he has been playing for Pénzügyőr Sport Egyesület . Schengelia has been playing for ŠK Duras BVK in the Czech extra league since the 2015/16 season .
