Buchuti Gurgenidze ( Georgian ბუხუტი გურგენიძე, Russian Бухути Иванович Гургенидзе , also Bukhuti Gurgenidze ; born November 13, 1933 in Surami , Inner Cartia , Georgia ; † May 23, 2008 in Tbilisi ) was a Georgian, formerly Soviet chess grandmaster .

Buchuti Gurgenidze was awarded the title of International Master by FIDE in 1966 and the title of Grand Master in 1970. He won the individual championship of the Georgian SSR twelve times : 1955, 1958-1965, 1968, 1970 and 1973. In 1957 and 1958 he won the student world championship with the Soviet team. He later coached several top Georgian players, including Maia Chiburdanidze and Nana Alexandria . In the 1990s he was also vice president of the Georgian Chess Federation.

A number of openings and variants are named after Buchuti Gurgenidse , for example the Gurgenidze variant in modern defense , the Gurgenidze variant in the Caro-Kann defense or the Gurgenidze variant in a line of the Rossolimo Sicilian.
