Konstantine Schanava (spelling for the World Chess Federation FIDE Konstantine Shanava , Georgian კონსტანტინე შანავა ; * May 5, 1985 in the Georgian SSR ) is a Georgian chess player and has been a grandmaster since 2006 .

Chess career

Konstantine Schanawa played several youth championships at national and international level, such as 1995 in Verdun ( Europe U10 ), 1997 in Tallinn (Europe U12) and in 2000 and 2001 in Tbilisi (Georgia U16). He achieved his greatest success in 2001 in Oropesa del Mar when he became the youth world champion of the under 16s.

In 2005, he met his standards for the title of Grand Master at tournaments in Olomouc, Istanbul and Baku. He had further international successes in Tbilisi in 2006 (third), Istanbul in 2007 (second behind Mikhail Gurevich ) and in Tbilisi in 2007 (first). In 2008 he shared third place with Mikheil Mtschedlischwili at the 67th Georgian Championship. At the Neckar Open 2012 in Deizisau , he won in the penultimate round against Étienne Bacrot . After a draw with Andrei Istratescu in the last round, both were tied first with 7.5 points each. Thanks to a better rating, Istratescu was the tournament winner.

Shanava took part in the Chess Olympiads in 2012 and 2014 with the Georgian national team. In 2012 he achieved the third-best individual result of the reserve players.
