Étienne Bacrot (born January 22, 1983 in Lille ) is a French chess player among the world's elite. He won the French individual championship eight times.
Life
Étienne Bacrot started playing chess at the age of four. As a ten-year-old he won his first international youth championships. a the U10 World Championship 1993 in Szombathely and the U10 European Championship 1993 in Bratislava . In 1994 and 1995 he won the U12 European championship in rapid chess in Paris and was second in the U12 world championship in Szeged , which he won in 1995 in São Lourenço . One of his first coaches was the former USSR master Josif Dorfman , later also the 13th world chess champion Garry Kasparov .
In 1996 Bacrot won a competition against ex-world champion Vasily Smyslow with 5: 1 (+4 = 2 −0) in Albert , in 1998 a success (3.5: 2.5, +1 = 5 −0) over Robert Hübner in Albert and Berlin and in 2002 a 3.5: 2.5 success over Boris Gelfand in Albert. In 2001 he drew 3: 3 (+1 = 4 −1) against Emil Sutovsky in Albert.
Bacrot achieved the three norms required for the award of the grandmaster title within six months: the first in October 1996 in Yerevan , the second in January 1997 at the Corus tournament in Wijk aan Zee and in March 1997 his last norm at the tournament in Enghien-les -Bains . In 1997, at the age of 14 years and 2 months, he was the youngest player in the world to win the Grandmaster title.
From 1999 to 2003 Bacrot was French champion five times in a row . In 2002 he won the tournament in Val-d'Isère after a playoff against Joël Lautier . At the first ever Internet European Championship, Bacrot was defeated by Israeli Emil Sutovsky in the final with 1.5: 3.5. Bacrot won in Verona in 2004 and defeated Ivan Sokolov in Albert with 3.5: 2.5 (+2 = 3 −1). In the same year he won all eleven games he played in the French team championship and was the first French player to ever receive an Elo rating of over 2,700.
In 2005 he and Viktor Bologan won the world-class tournament in Poikowski , and in the same year a shared second place in Dortmund . At the World Cup in Khanty-Mansiysk 2005 Bacrot was third after a victory against Alexander Grishchuk down battle and thus qualified for the FIDE reintroduced Candidates Tournament for the World Cup. There he was eliminated in the first round with 0.5: 3.5 against Gata Kamsky . In August 2008 he was again French national champion after a playoff victory (1.5: 0.5) against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave . In February 2009 he won the Aeroflot Open in Moscow with 6.5 points from nine rounds after scoring before the Ukrainian grandmaster Alexander Moiseenko and thus secured an invitation to the Dortmund Chess Days . In 2012 he won the French individual championship for the seventh time, and in 2017 he won the title again after a playoff against Laurent Fressinet .
Bacrot lives in Carqueiranne . Bacrot is No. 7 in the Chess960 world rankings (as of February 1, 2009) with a WNCA-IPS ( Individual Player Strength of the World New Chess Association ) of 2761.

In 1996, at the age of 13, Bacrot played for the French national team in a chess Olympiad for the first time , and since then he has participated in a total of six Chess Olympiads ( 1996 , 1998 , 2002 , 2006 , 2008 and 2014 ). At the 2006 Chess Olympiad in Turin , he won an individual bronze medal for the third best rating of all participants. Between 2001 and 2015 he took part in seven European team championships (2001, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011 , 2013 and 2015), except in 2015 he always played on the top board of the French team. With the team, he finished second in León in 2001 and in Warsaw in 2013, and third in Gothenburg in 2005 , and in the individual ranking he achieved the second-best result on the fourth board in 2015.

Bacrot played in France with NAO Caissa until 2006 , with Club de Chess 15 Paris in the 2006/07 season, with Marseille Echecs from the 2007/08 season to the 2012/13 season and with Bischwiller since the 2014/15 season . He became French team champion in 2003 , 2004 , 2005 , 2006 , 2011 , 2015 , 2018 and 2019 .
Bacrot played in the Bundesliga chess league from 1999 to 2002 for SG Porz , in the 2003/04 season for the Bremer Schachgesellschaft von 1877 , and since the 2005/2006 season he has been playing for OSG Baden-Baden . He was German team champion in 2000 , 2006 , 2007 , 2008 , 2009 , 2010 , 2011 , 2012 , 2013 , 2014 , 2015 , 2017 , 2018 and 2019 .
Bacrot won the British Four Nations Chess League in the 2009-10 season with Wood Green Hilsmark Kingfisher and in the 2018-19 season with Guildford . In Spain, Bacrot played for CA Intel-Tiendas UPI Mancha Real in 2007 , and has been playing for the Gros XT team since 2009 , with which he became champions in 2011 .
Bacrot took part in the European Club Cup twelve times (1999 with ŠK Kiseljak , 2002 to 2005 with NAO Caissa , 2007 to 2009, 2011 and 2012 with OSG Baden-Baden , 2014 and 2015 with Obiettivo Risarcimento Padova ). With the team he won the competition in 2003 and 2004, came second in 2008 and third in 1999 and 2005. In the individual ranking he achieved the best result on the second board in 2008, the second best result on the fifth board in 2003 and the third board in 2011, and the third best result on the fourth board in 2014.
