National I 2002/03
The Nationale I 2002/03 was the 24th French team championship in chess . At the same time, this was the last season in which the top division carried this designation, for the following season it was renamed Top 16 .
Champion Paris NAO , while the defending champion CEMC Monaco had to settle for eighth place. From the National II were the Club de Union Saint Bruno-Bordeaux Echecs , the Club de Bischwiller and the Club de Tour Prends Garde! Besançon rose (there was no fourth climber, since AJE Noyon had occupied a relegation place in Nationale I last year , but the club's second team had won the northern season of Nationale II at the same time). As the only climber, Bischwiller achieved relegation, while Bordeaux and Besançon had to relegate together with Noyon and the Club d'Echecs de Sautron . mode
The tournament was divided into a preliminary round and a final round. The 16 participating teams were divided into two groups of eight ( Groupe A and Groupe B ) and played a simple round-robin tournament in these . The first four of both groups played in Poule Haute , the last four in Poule Basse against relegation. Teams that met in the preliminary round did not play against each other again in the final round. First, the total of the team points achieved in the preliminary and final rounds (3 points for a win, 2 points for a draw, 1 point for a defeat, 0 points for a defeat without a fight) decided on the placement, then the difference between winning and losing games ( also taking into account the preliminary and final round) and ultimately the number of winning games.
Game dates
The competitions were held from January 31 to February 2, from April 3 to 6 and from May 7 to 10, 2003. In Groupe A, two competitions were played in Drancy and Sautron during the first three rounds the fourth to seventh round was organized centrally in Bordeaux . In Groupe B, two competitions were played in Montpellier and Bischwiller in the first three rounds , while the fourth to seventh rounds were held centrally in Besançon . All the Poule Haute and Poule Basse competitions took place in Clermont-Ferrand .

Groupe A
Even before the last lap, NAO, Clichy and Gonfreville had three participants in the Poule Haute, and Monaco secured the last starting position in a long-distance duel with Drancy.

Poule Basse
In the relegation round, three relegated teams were already determined before the last round: Bordeaux, Noyon and Sautron. Vandœuvre, Drancy, Nancy and Besançon fought to stay in the last round. With Vandœuvre won, Drancy drew and Nancy narrowly lost, Besançon would not have been able to hold their own even if they had won instead of a tie.
