The Caterham CT05 was the fourth Formula 1 - racing car of Caterham F1 Team (formerly Lotus) and the third to the chassis name Caterham . The vehicle was used in the 2014 Formula 1 season and was presented to the public on January 28, 2014 at the Circuito de Jerez .

Due to the bankruptcy of the Caterham team, the team did not take part in the two races in the USA and Brazil .

Technology and development

Changed front at the Singapore Grand Prix

The Caterham CT05 was the successor model of the Caterham CT03 , although the vehicle differed significantly from the previous model, both visually and technically due to rule changes for the 2014 Formula 1 World Championship .

Due to the rule changes for the 2014 season, the nose of the vehicle was significantly lower than that of the vehicle from the previous year. This was shaped very conspicuously and differed significantly from the noses of all other vehicles of the 2014 season. The front section was reminiscent of the previous model until just before the front wing, but was then supported by a flat, thin and pointed second nose that extended far forward protruded over the front wing. Towards the middle of the season, the front section was significantly revised and the two-stage nose replaced. The new design no longer stood out very much from most of the competing vehicles.

The CT05 was powered by the newly developed Renault Energy F1 2014 , a 1.6-liter V6 engine with a turbocharger . Due to the regulations, there was only one central exhaust pipe that ended above the rear light. The ERS also comes from Renault , the inner workings of the eight-speed transmission came from Red Bull Racing .

Painting and sponsorship

The base coat of the CT05 was again green. The front and rear wings of the car were matt black. After the lower nose was painted in green during the test drives before the season, it was painted in matt black on the race weekends, just like the front wing. Sponsor stickers came from Airbus , General Electric , CNN and Renault .

driver

Caterham started the 2014 season with the driver duo Kamui Kobayashi and Marcus Ericsson . Kamui Kobayashi returned to Formula 1 after driving a year in the GTE-Pro class of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) for the Ferrari AF Corse factory team . Ericsson contested his first season in Formula 1, in 2013 he drove at DAMS in the GP2 series and achieved sixth place overall.

At the Belgian Grand Prix , Caterham competed with André Lotterer instead of Kobayashi, as the new management, which has led the team since the British Grand Prix , claims that the drivers contribute to the financing of the racing team. Lotterer's commitment, which was also his Formula 1 debut, was funded by the Belgian energy drink manufacturer Hype , which belongs to the former racing driver Bertrand Gachot .

Roberto Merhi was supposed to take over the cockpit for the Italian Grand Prix , but his engagement failed due to a lack of a super license . He was only allowed to participate in the first free practice. Lotterer was offered the cockpit again for the rest of the weekend, but declined because he wanted to be used in the first free practice. Therefore Kobayashi came back to use.

After the team had to skip the races in the USA and Brazil, Kobayashi and Will Stevens drove the last race of the season, as Ericsson had previously terminated his contract with the team.
