The Singapore Grand Prix 2014 (officially 2014 Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix ) took place on 21 September at the Marina Bay Street Circuit in Singapore instead and was the 14th race of the Formula 1 World Championship in 2014 .

Reports

background

After the Italian Grand Prix , Nico Rosberg led the drivers' standings with 22 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton and 72 points ahead of Daniel Ricciardo . Mercedes led the constructors' championship with 182 points ahead of Red Bull-Renault and with 277 points ahead of Williams .

At the Singapore Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Soft (yellow) and P Zero Supersoft (red) as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

The DRS zones remained unchanged compared to the previous year. The measuring point for the first zone was 230 meters before turn five, the DRS zone began 50 meters after the turn. The second measuring point was 80 meters before turn 22, the DRS zone was on the start-finish straight and began 45 meters after turn 23.

Minor changes were made to the track, the pit lane and some other sections of the track were re-paved. In addition, the position of the wall in turn seven has been changed.

Marcus Ericsson (five), Jules Bianchi , Kevin Magnussen , Pastor Maldonado (four each), Valtteri Bottas , Adrian Sutil (two each) and Jean-Éric Vergne (one) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

With Sebastian Vettel (three times), Fernando Alonso (twice) and Hamilton (once), three former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

Alan Jones (AUS), Lars Österlind (SWE), Roger Peart (CAN) and Nish Shetty (SIN) acted as race stewards.

In the run-up to the race, the FIA informed the teams that no radio conversation from the pits to the driver [may] contain any information relating to the performance of the car or the driver. In the past, drivers had repeatedly received data from their engineers on various technical settings or sector times from competitors (so-called coaching ). No rule change was necessary for this, only Article 20.1 of the sporting regulations, which states that the driver must drive the car alone and without outside help, is interpreted much more narrowly. This was a response to criticism that the box radio published on TV broadcasts is damaging the image of Formula 1.

training

In the first free practice session, Alonso set the fastest time in 1: 49.056 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Rosberg. Vettel suffered an engine failure in this training. In the second free practice, Hamilton was the fastest in 1: 47.490 minutes ahead of Alonso and Ricciardo. Due to the engine change, Vettel was only used in the last eight minutes. An accident in Maldonado, in which the vehicle was badly damaged, caused the only interruption in training.

In the third free practice session, Alonso set the fastest time ahead of Ricciardo and Rosberg.

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 16 drivers reached the next part. Kimi Raikkonen drove the fastest lap. The Caterham and Marussia pilots as well as Maldonado and Sutil were eliminated.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Rosberg drove the fastest lap. The Force India pilots as well as Romain Grosjean , Esteban Gutiérrez , Vergne and Jenson Button were eliminated.

The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. After all drivers had set a time, both Mercedes drivers were in the middle. In their last attempt, both achieved the fastest lap at their time. Hamilton finally achieved pole position seven thousandths of a second ahead of Rosberg. Ricciardo came in third.

run

Before the start, Rosberg had problems with the electronics and changed the steering wheel several times. At the start of the warm-up lap, he could not leave the grid and was pushed into the pit lane, from where he started the race. Kobayashi stopped in the formation lap and did not start.

Hamilton kept the lead at the start. Alonso sat down next to both Red Bull drivers on the outside, but missed the braking point for the first corner. He drove straight through the run-off zone and passed both of them. In order to avoid a penalty for an advantage by leaving the track, he let Vettel pass again during the first lap, but stayed ahead of Ricciardo. Rosberg found it difficult at the end of the field. He continued to have electronics problems that caused the drag reduction system , ERS-K and overspeed governor to fail, as well as shifting problems. He finally gave up on his first pit stop. After the race, it turned out that a quality assurance agent used to reveal cracks in the harness had shorted the cables in the steering column.

Hamilton stayed out of the top the longest. The first four positions remained unchanged after the phase of the first pit stops, Felipe Massa took fifth place from Raikkonen.

Vergne received a five-second time penalty for leaving the track on lap 18. Gutiérrez retired a lap later with a problem with the powertrain. The second pit stop phase began shortly afterwards. Alonso pitted a lap before Vettel and managed to drive past his opponent. Vettel switched to the soft tires while Alonso continued to ride the super soft ones. Ricciardo and Hamilton pitted a little later. Ricciardo chose the same strategy as Vettel, Hamilton the same as Alonso.

On the 31st lap, Sergio Pérez and Sutil collided , with Pérez damaging the front wing and spreading parts on the track. Both drivers drove on. Because of the parts lying on the track, the safety car was sent out on the track. Hamilton missed the time to pit and stayed outside. As the only driver in the leading group, Alonso pitted and switched to the soft tires so that he could drive through. Sutil received a five-second penalty for leaving the track.

Hamilton leads the two Red Bull drivers and Alonso during the safety car phase

Magnussen had problems with an overheated vehicle and reported by radio to the pits that his seat and the liquid in his water bottle were very hot. During the safety car phase, he alternately held both of his arms out of the cockpit to cool. After the race, McLaren discovered that a seal in the area of the radiator had failed, causing hot air to flow into the cockpit. The water in Magnussen's drinking bottle therefore began to boil, he also suffered burns and had to receive medical treatment after the race.

The race was reopened on the 38th lap. Hamilton quickly moved away from the rest of the field, at times he was three seconds faster than his pursuers. He had to pull out a lead of around 29 seconds because the Red Bull drivers in second and third and Alonso in fourth wanted to pass through without another pit stop. Vettel had originally planned to do a final sprint on the super soft tires, but this plan was rejected by his team because of the safety car. A few laps after the restart, Sutil gave up with a water leak so as not to suffer engine damage.

Hamilton stayed on the track until the 52nd lap and only fell behind Vettel after the stop. One lap later he passed him and took the lead again. Meanwhile, Button was rolled out on the track after the electrical system on his vehicle failed. However, the safety car was no longer used to recover the vehicle.

Vergne received another five-second time penalty for leaving the track when he overtook Maldonado. On the 59th lap he overtook Raikkonen and Bottas at the same time, and Pérez also passed both of them shortly afterwards. Bottas, who had the oldest tires in this group, let Raikkonen, Nico Hülkenberg and Magnussen pass on the following lap . He dropped out of the top 10, while Vergne set himself apart from Pérez by more than seven seconds with fast lap times to the finish and thus stayed ahead of him in the final result.

The race was ended after 60 laps, one lap before the planned end, due to the time limit. Hamilton won ahead of Vettel and Ricciardo. Vettel achieved his best result of the season to date with second place. Alonso was fourth, Massa fifth. Vergne, Pérez, Räikkönen, Hülkenberg and Magnussen completed the top 10.

In the world championship, Hamilton took the lead over Rosberg. Ricciardo stayed in third place. The first three positions in the constructors' championship remained unchanged.

Two weeks after the race, it was revealed that Vergne had waited just 4.7 seconds to serve his first five-second penalty. Therefore the control and reporting system was modified for the next race. No penalty was given.
