The Australian Grand Prix 2014 (officially 2014 Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix ) took place on 16 March at the Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne instead and was the first race of the Formula 1 World Championship in 2014 . Nico Rosberg ( Mercedes ) won the race ahead of Kevin Magnussen and Jenson Button (both McLaren-Mercedes ).
report
background
New engine regulations were introduced for the 2014 season so that all teams and drivers used new engines. Turbo engines have been used again for the first time since the Australian Grand Prix in 1988 .
Pirelli provided the P Zero Medium (white) and P Zero Soft (yellow) compounds as tires, as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .
The two DRS zones were in the same places as in 2013, the first zone on the start-finish straight exactly 762 meters before the first corner, the Jones . After the Brabham began the second zone, which was 510 meters long. There was only one measuring point for both DRS zones, at which the distance to the vehicle in front was determined; he was eight feet from the Stewart . In the event of a successful overtaking maneuver on the start-finish straight, the driver in front was allowed to use the DRS again in the second zone.
Marcus Ericsson ( Caterham ), Daniil Kwjat ( Toro Rosso ) and Kevin Magnussen ( McLaren ) made their Formula 1 debut at this Grand Prix. Nico Hülkenberg ( Force India ), Pastor Maldonado ( Lotus ), Felipe Massa ( Williams ), Sergio Pérez ( Force India), Daniel Ricciardo ( Red Bull ) and Adrian Sutil ( Sauber ) started for their new teams for the first time. Kamui Kobayashi (Caterham) and Kimi Räikkönen ( Ferrari ) returned to Formula 1. Kobayashi was last used at the 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix and Raikkonen at the 2013 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix .
With Jenson Button (three times), Raikkonen (twice), Fernando Alonso , Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel (once each), five former winners competed in this Grand Prix.
Steve Chopping (AUS), Gerd Ennser (GER), Tim Mayer (USA) and Emanuele Pirro (ITA) acted as race stewards .
training
In the first free practice, Alonso set the fastest time ahead of Button and Valtteri Bottas . Only 16 drivers managed to set a time, with only the first 14 being within the 107 percent time required for qualification . The ninth placed Jean-Éric Vergne drove the most laps . The times were four and a half seconds slower compared to the first training session last year. Most of the teams dealt with function tests in the first training session.
In the second practice session, Hamilton, who did not complete a timed lap in the first session after a faulty display on an oil pressure sensor, took the lead from his teammate Nico Rosberg . Alonso finished third. All 19 drivers who had set a time were within the 107 percent interval. Vettel completed the most laps in fourth place. Ericsson, Kobayashi and Maldonado did not complete a timed lap in either of the two training sessions. Both Toro Rosso drivers had problems with the new brake-by-wire technology. Shortly before the end of training, Hülkenberg and Romain Grosjean slipped into the gravel.
In the third free practice, Rosberg achieved a superior best time with 1.391 seconds ahead of Button. Alonso finished third. The fastest times were achieved with the Soft tire compound. Hamilton, who was fastest on the medium compound, made a driving mistake on his fast lap on the softer tires. Magnussen drove most of the laps and finished eighth. 19 pilots set a time, of which the first 18 were within the 107 percent hurdle. Ericsson was the only driver who did not achieve a fast enough time in any training session. Bottas and Esteban Gutiérrez suffered transmission damage.
Qualifying
The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 16 drivers reached the next part. Ricciardo was the fastest. It started to rain a few minutes before the end of the segment, so that no time improvements were possible. The Lotus and Marussia drivers as well as Ericsson and Gutiérrez were eliminated. Maldonado did not set any time and thus failed to qualify. Since he had set a sufficiently fast time in the third free practice session, he was subsequently allowed to start.
The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Q2 took place on a wet track. The pilots used intermediate tires. Rosberg took the lead. Räikkönen hit the wall at the end of turn 6 . Pérez, Kobayashi, Sutil, Vettel, Räikkönen and Button did not make it into the last part of the time training.
The last section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, in which the first ten starting positions were assigned. It was still a little wetter, so that some pilots drove on full-wet tires. Hamilton finally set the fastest time ahead of Ricciardo and Rosberg. Shortly before the end, Kvjat lost control of his vehicle and damaged the front of the car.
Due to premature gear changes, Bottas and Gutiérrez were moved five positions back.
run
Since Grosjean's car had been worked on between qualifying and the race and the Parc Fermé rule was violated, Grosjean had to start out of the pits. Because he drove to the end of the pit lane too early, he was given a drive-through penalty before the start of the race. At the start of the warm-up lap, Max Chilton stopped. He was pushed into the pit lane and started the race from there.
After all the drivers had returned to the grid and taken their positions, Jules Bianchi signaled that he had stalled his engine. Therefore the start was canceled and the race distance was reduced by one lap. Bianchi was pitted and started the race a few laps behind. The other pilots drove another warm-up lap before the race finally began. In this additional introductory lap, Vettel complained to his team by radio about insufficient engine performance.
Rosberg started best from third place and took the lead. There were changes in position throughout the field. There was a collision between Kobayashi and Massa because Kobayashi had driven into Massa at the end of the start-finish straight. Both pilots were eliminated. Massa then demanded a penalty for Kobayashi for assuming a driving error. The race stewards investigated the incident. It turned out that Kobayashi was not to blame for the incident as the rear brakes on his Caterham were not working.
Hamilton lost further positions and was asked to give up in the pits in the second round. After Mercedes withdrew this order for a short time, Hamilton pitted at the end of the third lap and gave up. His engine misfired in a cylinder. One lap later, Vettel also finished the race in the pits with technical difficulties. He was previously slower than Rosberg at around 15 seconds per lap.
Rosberg led the race in the early stages ahead of Ricciardo, Magnussen, Hülkenberg, Alonso, Bottas, Raikkonen, Vergne, Kwjat and Button. While Rosberg gradually expanded his lead, Bottas put Alonso under pressure. He touched the wall at the exit of Clark , his Williams suffered a tire damage at the rear right, and the rim broke. Bottas pitted, but lost the tire and parts of the rim on the way there. The race management decided to send the safety car out onto the track in order to be able to recover the debris. Most pilots used this to change tires. Bottas fell back to sixteenth place.
When he restarted on lap 16, Rosberg kept the lead and quickly pulled away from the rest of the field. In the 19th lap he finally drove the fastest race lap and then began to drive the race in a controlled manner at the front. In the meantime, Alonso put Hülkenberg under pressure in the duel for fourth place. However, there was no attempt to overtake.
Before the second pit stop phase began, Ericsson and Maldonado were eliminated. Ericsson had problems with the oil pressure, at Maldonado the ERS-K was defective. With a somewhat earlier pit stop, Button managed to get past Hülkenberg and Alonso. Alonso was able to leave Hulkenberg behind and, as a result, pulled away from him.
While Grosjean had to give up the race with a defective ERS-K, Bottas, who had worked his way up again, was noticed in the front field with overtaking maneuvers. In the 47th lap he passed Vergne, in the 53rd lap he passed Hulkenberg to sixth place. Magnussen put Ricciardo under pressure at the front, but there was no attempt to overtake.
Rosberg finally won the race with a superior start-to-finish victory and thus achieved the 100th victory of a racing car with a Mercedes engine in Formula 1. Ricciardo crossed the finish line in second place, but was disqualified after the race for having the had exceeded the maximum permissible fuel flow rate several times during the race. The race management informed Red Bull three times before the race about the irregularities in Ricciardo's car with the request that the maximum permissible gasoline flow rate be observed. The racing team ignored this request. If Red Bull had complied with the request, the race management would not have issued a penalty. Red Bull appealed against the decision of the race management and justified it with inconsistencies in the FIA fuel flow meter on several vehicles over the weekend. Four weeks after the race, Red Bull's appeal was dismissed by the FIA appeals court. During the negotiation it became known that Ricciardo had only complied with the permissible fuel flow rate behind the safety car. Red Bull argued that the FIA's measuring device was faulty.
Magnussen moved up to second place. With this he achieved the first podium of his career in his first Formula 1 race. It was the first podium finish by a debutant since the 2007 Australian Grand Prix , in which Hamilton finished third. In addition, Magnussen became the first Dane on the Formula 1 podium. Button came third.
The top 10 completed Alonso, Bottas, Hülkenberg, Räikkönen, Vergne, Kwjat and Pérez. Bottas also achieved the best result of his Formula 1 career in this race. Kwjat drove in his debut race in the points and became the youngest driver of the Formula 1 World Championship to score a point at the age of 19 years and 324 days.
After the first race, the drivers' standings were identical to the race results. For the designers, the lead went to McLaren ahead of Mercedes and Ferrari.
Comments from the first three drivers
“That was an incredible day for us. To start the season with a win is amazing. So I want to say a big thank you to everyone who helped develop our car over the winter. I've always dreamed of having such a strong Silver Arrow and now it seems to be the case. The race went perfectly for me. My start was great and I was able to push to the end because we had our fuel consumption well under control.
Despite our success today, we know that there is still a lot to be done. We have seen over the course of this weekend that reliability is still an issue. Unfortunately she prevented a strong result with both cars today. We now have two weeks to improve in this area. I'm really looking forward to Malaysia and would like to race there tomorrow! "
“The whole thing is difficult for me to grasp and quite surreal.
It's my first time in Formula 1, but the tests were good. The car was much better recently than at the beginning. Everything went really well today and everything went well for the whole race.
I wish my father could have been here today. It's a wonderful day and I am very happy. "
“It's been a long time since we led. We are not at the top because we are the fastest, but because we have a reliable car and are relatively quick on the road. It feels good.
I enjoyed it. I had told the guys that if we started well, we'd get ahead quickly - especially considering how difficult the cars are on the brakes. "
