report

background

After the Chinese Grand Prix , Nico Rosberg led the drivers' standings with four points ahead of Lewis Hamilton and 38 points ahead of Fernando Alonso . Mercedes led the constructors' championship with 97 points ahead of Red Bull-Renault and with 100 points ahead of Force India-Mercedes .

At the Spanish Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Hard (orange) and P Zero Medium (white), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

The measuring point for the first DRS zone was 86 meters in front of the Campsa , the zone began 40 meters after the curve. The measuring point for the second DRS zone, which was on the start-finish straight, was the safety car line, the DRS was then allowed to be activated 157 meters after the New Holland .

Jules Bianchi (four), Pastor Maldonado (three), Valtteri Bottas , Kevin Magnussen and Adrian Sutil (two each) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

With Kimi Räikkönen , Alonso (twice each), Felipe Massa , Jenson Button , Sebastian Vettel and Maldonado (once each), six former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

The race stewards were Garry Connelly (AUS), David Domingo (ESP), Danny Sullivan (USA) and Farhan Vohra (IND).

training

In the first free practice, Hamilton set the fastest time ahead of Button and Daniel Ricciardo . Felipe Nasr took over the Williams from Valtteri Bottas and Giedo van der Garde took over the Sauber from Esteban Gutiérrez in this training session . Vettel suffered a technical defect during this training session when a cable harness was damaged. The repairs to this defect were so complex that Vettel could no longer go out on the track in the second training session. In the second free practice, Hamilton stayed in front. Rosberg finished second, Ricciardo third. In Jean-Éric Vergne a wheel was briefly attached not right, so he lost it in the first corner before the finish. He was given a starting place penalty of ten positions. His team Toro Rosso also received a fine of 30,000 US dollars . Max Chilton finished training just before the time ran out in the gravel trap.

In the third free practice session, Rosberg took over the lead from his team-mate, who dropped to second place. However, Hamilton had canceled his qualifying simulation. Alonso reached the third position.

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 16 drivers reached the next part. Maldonado had an accident in the fifth minute and triggered an interruption. He hadn't scored any time and therefore failed to qualify. Maldonado was subsequently admitted to the race because he was fast enough in training. Rosberg was the fastest driver. In addition to Maldonado, the Caterham and Marussia pilots and Sutil did not make it into the second part.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Rosberg stayed in the lead. Vergne and Magnussen did without a timed lap. In addition to the two, the Force India pilots as well as Gutiérrez and Daniil Kwjat were eliminated.

The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. Vettel stopped in the fourth minute with a technical defect in the third corner and triggered an interruption. His gearbox was then changed prematurely, so that he was moved five positions back on the starting grid. At this point several pilots were on their fast lap. Times had not yet been set. Hamilton ultimately drove the fastest lap and thus achieved pole position in front of Rosberg and Ricciardo.

After qualifying, the following five drivers were randomly selected for a doping test : Romain Grosjean , Nico Hülkenberg , Maldonado, Sutil and Vergne.

run

With the exception of Vergne, all drivers started on medium tires. The Mercedes stayed in the lead. Ricciardo fell back to third place behind Bottas. In the back of the field there was a contact between Maldonado and Marcus Ericsson on the first laps . No vehicle was damaged in the process. Maldonado was given a 5-second time penalty by the race stewards and received one penalty point. In the meantime, the Mercedes were at the top. Hamilton also drove out a small lead over Rosberg.

While there were some overtaking maneuvers in midfield, Ricciardo put Bottas under pressure. He was unable to overtake, however, because his top speed was too low. Ricciardo dropped back briefly, but caught up with Bottas again shortly afterwards. In sixth place, Raikkonen was right in front of his team-mate Alonso, who did not attempt to overtake.

Vettel began the first pit stop phase on lap twelve. Ricciardo followed two laps later. Red Bull shared the strategy: Vettel switched to the harder tires, Ricciardo stayed on medium. Ricciardo managed by an earlier stop to move past Bottas to third position. Hamilton pitted three laps before Rosberg and temporarily lost the lead. After both were in the pits, Hamilton was back in front. Similar to Red Bull, Mercedes shared the strategy. Hamilton stayed on the softer tires, Rosberg switched to the harder compound. Due to the pit stops, there were some overtaking maneuvers, mostly between drivers on tires of different ages. However, after his stop, Raikkonen managed to drive past Grosjean, who had also stopped. Shortly afterwards, Alonso also passed Grosjean. In the meantime Vergne had broken down with an exhaust fault.

In the 34th lap, Vettel pitted for the second time, opting for a three-stop strategy. Alonso pitted shortly afterwards and switched to the harder mixture. With that, Alonso could theoretically have passed. Originally, Alonso had also planned a two-stop strategy. However, since his second set of tires was no longer as powerful and Vettel, whom Alonso wanted to keep behind, had changed the strategy, Alonso decided to do the same, while his Ferrari team- mate Raikkonen on the originally planned two-stop strategy stayed. In the meantime, Kamui Kobayashi gave up with a brake failure.

Among the Mercedes drivers, Hamilton was again the first to pit on lap 43. Rosberg briefly took the lead. After both pit stops, Hamilton was leading on the harder mix in front of Rosberg on medium tires by about four seconds. Ricciardo, who was far behind in third place, followed the same strategy as Hamilton.

In the 53rd lap, Vettel began the third pit stop phase. Shortly afterwards he drove the fastest lap of the race and over the next few laps passed Raikkonen and Bottas into fourth place. Alonso also caught up with the fresher tires and passed his team-mate Raikkonen. At the top, Rosberg gradually caught up with Hamilton. He was still less than a second behind Hamilton, but he was unable to overtake.

Hamilton won the race ahead of Rosberg and Ricciardo, who was 49 seconds behind Hamilton. This was the fourth time in a row that Mercedes achieved a double victory. The last time a team had at least four one-two victories in a row was in 2002, when Ferrari won the last five races with one one-two. Mercedes also achieved double victories in the last four races of the season in 1955 , but in contrast to the current winning streak with different driver constellations. Starting from 15th place, Vettel reached fourth place and attracted attention during the race with a few overtaking maneuvers. Bottas was fifth, Alonso and Räikkönen followed in sixth and seventh. Grosjean, Pérez and Hülkenberg completed the top 10. With this, Lotus, who had achieved several podium finishes and also a victory in 2013 , scored points for the first time through Grosjean in the fifth race.

In the World Championship, Hamilton took the lead from Rosberg, who dropped to second place. Alonso stayed third. In the constructors' world championship, Mercedes expanded its lead. Red Bull stayed second, Ferrari took third.
