The Malaysian Grand Prix 2014 (officially 2014 Formula 1 Petronas Malaysia Grand Prix ) took place on 30 March at the Sepang International Circuit in Sepang instead and was the second race of the Formula 1 World Championship in 2014 .
report
background
After the Australian Grand Prix , Nico Rosberg led the drivers' standings with seven points from Kevin Magnussen and ten points from Jenson Button . McLaren-Mercedes led the constructors' championship with eight points ahead of Mercedes and with 15 points ahead of Ferrari .
At the Malaysian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Hard (orange) and P Zero Medium (white), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .
The two DRS zones were in the same places as in 2013. The first zone was on the back straight and began 104 meters after curve 14. The measuring point for this zone was 54 meters after curve 12. The second DRS zone was located on the immediately following start and finish straight and began 28 meters behind curve 15. The measuring point for this DRS zone was 16 meters after the apex of curve 15.
Compared to the previous year, slight changes were made to the track, for example the artificial turf was removed from the outside of turns 1, 5, 7, 8 and 12. After an inspection of the track in December 2013 found waves at various points in the grass run-out, these were made level. Two changes were also made to the curbs - the curb was lengthened at the exit of curve 5, and a new curb was installed at the entrance to the hairpin curve at the end of the back straight (curve 15).
With Fernando Alonso , Sebastian Vettel (three times each), Kimi Räikkönen (twice) and Button (once), four former winners competed in this Grand Prix.
The race commissioners were Silvia Bellot (ESP), Martin Donnelly (GBR), Lars Österlind (SWE) and Shah Yahya (MAS).
The designer Williams started a Formula 1 race at this Grand Prix for the 600th time.
training
In the first free practice, Lewis Hamilton set the fastest time ahead of Raikkonen and Rosberg. 19 drivers set a time, of which 18 were within the 107 percent time . In the second free practice, Rosberg took the lead. Raikkonen came second, Vettel third. The gaps were very small, so that the first seven drivers were within 0.367 seconds. In the long run tests with heavier cars, Mercedes seemed to be the strongest. All 20 drivers who set a time were within the 107 percent time. Pastor Maldonado did not do a timed lap in any training session, Kobayashi only did the first one, where he was slower than the 107 percent time.
In the third free practice session, Rosberg kept the lead from Hamilton and Raikkonen, who, as the best non-Mercedes driver, was more than a second behind. 21 drivers set a time, 19 of which were within the 107 percent interval. Kobayashi never managed to set a fast enough time in any training session. Both McLaren drivers had technical problems in this session, so Button's fastest McLaren lap was over 25 seconds slower than the fastest time.
Qualifying
Due to heavy rain, qualifying was postponed by 50 minutes. The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 16 drivers reached the next part. The track was already a bit dry due to the delay, so the fastest lap times were set on intermediates, although some riders tried the full wets. The first section was canceled 35 seconds before the regular end after an accident by Marcus Ericsson . Rosberg posted the fastest time. The Caterham and Marussia pilots as well as Adrian Sutil and Pastor Maldonado were eliminated. All drivers qualified for the race.
The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. After two minutes the session was interrupted because Alonso collided with Daniil Kwjat and parts of it were lost. Both drivers made it back to the pits. Kwjat had no major damage, Alonso a break in the front left tie rod, which was changed within a few minutes. Since it was a little wetter, the fastest laps were completed on the full wets. Some riders tried intermediates first but eventually switched to the other mix. Hamilton drove the fastest lap. The Williams pilots as well as Romain Grosjean , Sergio Pérez , Esteban Gutiérrez and Kwjat were eliminated.
The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. Hamilton kept the lead and achieved pole position in front of Vettel and Rosberg. Except for Button, who finished tenth on Intermediates, all of them set their fastest times on full wets.
Valtteri Bottas was moved three positions back on the starting grid because he had obstructed Daniel Ricciardo in Q2. In addition, the race stewards gave Bottas two penalty points for this action. This made Bottas the first Formula 1 driver to receive the penalty points introduced before the season.
run
Pérez did not start the race because he had not started on the grid due to transmission problems and the defect could not be repaired in time.
Hamilton kept the lead while Rosberg took second place ahead of Vettel and Ricciardo. Before the fourth corner, Jules Bianchi collided with Maldonado, where he slightly damaged his car. The race stewards saw Bianchi as the culprit of the collision and imposed a 5-second time penalty on him. Bianchi was also given two penalty points. Bianchi and Maldonado continued, but both gave up after a few laps with technical problems.
Raikkonen, who had lost positions on the starting lap, collided with Magnussen, who had run into him, on the second lap. Magnussen slashed the right rear tire of Raikkonen with his front wing. Raikkonen drove to the pits at a slow pace and had the tires changed, which is why he fell back to last place. Magnussen initially stayed on the track and had the front wing changed during an early pit stop. Magnussen was given a 5-second time penalty and two penalty points by the race stewards for causing a collision.
The Williams drivers made it into the top 10 in the start phase, while Hamilton pulled away from the front of the field. Rosberg also gained a lead over the drivers behind him, but he was unable to keep up with Hamilton. In the twelfth lap, Alonso, who was in fifth place, began the phase of the first pit stops for the leading group. Ricciardo initially fell behind Alonso, but overtook him on the first lap after his stop. Hamilton stayed the longest on the track and thus kept the lead. In the leading group, the first pit stops did not lead to any position changes. Hamilton was leading at this point in front of Rosberg, Vettel, Ricciardo, Alonso and Hülkenberg. Jean-Éric Vergne gave up at this stage of the race with technical problems.
During the second pit stops Ricciardo, Alonso and Nico Hülkenberg opted for the harder mixture, while Hamilton, Rosberg and Vettel stayed on the softer one. Ricciardo again had problems with the gasoline flow sensor in this race, which had failed during the race. Red Bull therefore used reference values from the FIA. In the meantime, Vettel caught up with Rosberg. Unfortunately for him, Sutil stayed on the start-finish straight, so that the Drag Reduction System (DRS) was deactivated. Vettel was therefore unable to attempt an attack on Rosberg. Rosberg withdrew shortly afterwards, so that Vettel was no longer directly behind Rosberg when the track was opened again and was therefore not allowed to use DRS. Shortly after Sutil, his teammate Gutiérrez gave up with technical problems.
In the last third of the race, all of the drivers of the first six drivers, with the exception of Hülkenberg, switched to the other mix. Hulkenberg drove through with two stops. Ricciardo's left front tire was not properly attached. He managed to stop in the pit lane and be pushed back into the pits, but he lost a lap in the process. In the further course of the race, he also suffered a front wing damage, which made a further repair stop necessary, so that he finally gave up a few laps before the end of the race, two laps behind in last place. Ricciardo was given a 10-second time penalty by the race stewards and a starting place penalty of ten positions for the next race.
Alonso finally managed to catch up on Hulkenberg, behind whom he had fallen back due to his pit stop, and overtake him. Behind Button, who was in sixth place, there was an internal duel between Williams drivers Felipe Massa and Bottas. Massa was asked by the racing team with a team order to let Bottas pass so that Bottas could attempt to overtake Button. However, Massa refused the instruction, while Bottas made no attempt to overtake.
Raikkonen put Grosjean, who was in eleventh place, under pressure in the final laps, but there was no attempt to overtake.
Hamilton eventually won the race ahead of Rosberg and Vettel. In addition to pole position, Hamilton also achieved the fastest race lap and led the race consistently, with which he managed a Grand Slam . Hamilton dedicated the victory to the passengers and relatives of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 , which had been missing for over 20 days. Alonso was fourth, Hulkenberg fifth. The top 10 completed Button, Massa, Bottas, Magnussen and Kwjat. While Magnussen and Kwjat finished in the points again in their second race, Ericsson made it to the first finish in 14th place.
The track stayed dry throughout.
In the world championship, Rosberg retained the lead in the drivers' championship. Hamilton took second, Alonso third. McLaren lost the lead to Mercedes among the designers. Ferrari stayed in third place.
It was the first double victory for the Mercedes designer since the 1955 Italian Grand Prix . At that time, Juan Manuel Fangio won ahead of Piero Taruffi .
Comments from the first three drivers
"Incredible! For the first time in eight years, victory has finally jumped out here. I owe that to the team, they kept putting pressure on getting the car to where it is now. A double victory like this is something special, I've never managed a double victory like this. After the tragedy here in this country, I dedicate the victory to the families. "
“I had a car to clean everyone up and am now happy to celebrate. We worked well with the engineers, which made a good start possible. There was quite a bit of action. I tried to chase Lewis, but he was too fast. "
“I think that was the best we could do today. It was interesting at the start. I scored an own goal in the first corner because I wanted to put Nico under pressure. The gap to Nico has stabilized, after the second pit stop I was closer. Then I fully attacked, unfortunately it was yellow and I couldn't overtake with DRS. That coincided with Ricciardo's problems. We then wanted to play it safe and also save gas. "
