The 2009 Malaysian Grand Prix took place on April 5th at the Sepang International Circuit in Sepang and was the second race of the 2009 Formula 1 World Championship . Jenson Button ( Brawn - Mercedes ) was the winner, ahead of Nick Heidfeld ( BMW Sauber ) and Timo Glock ( Toyota ). Due to torrential rain, the race had to be stopped after 32 laps.
Reports
background
After the Australian Grand Prix , Jenson Button led the drivers' standings with 2 points ahead of Rubens Barrichello and 4 points ahead of Jarno Trulli. Brawn-Mercedes led the constructors' championship with 7 points ahead of Toyota and 14 points ahead of Renault.
The start time has been moved from 3pm to 5pm MYT . This was done in order to be able to offer the European viewers better airtime (9 a.m. UTC ).
With Fernando Alonso , Kimi Räikkönen (twice each) and Giancarlo Fisichella (once), three former winners competed in this Grand Prix.
training
In the first free practice session, Nico Rosberg achieved the fastest lap time. His Williams teammate Kazuki Nakajima took second place, Jenson Button came third. In the second free practice session, Rosberg did not set the fastest lap time for the first time. Ferrari driver Kimi Räikkönen achieved the best time ahead of his teammates Felipe Massa and Sebastian Vettel . In the third free practice, Rosberg was again the fastest driver ahead of Mark Webber and Felipe Massa.
Qualifying
Rubens Barrichello posted the best time in the first qualifying period. The Force India pilots, Buemi , Piquet and Massa were eliminated. The runner-up world champion and his team made a serious mistake: Since they were sure that the time they had achieved would be enough to advance, they decided against another attempt to save laps. When the times got better and better towards the end of the section, it was no longer possible to intervene and Massa was eliminated.
In the second segment, Button, the leader of the drivers' standings, set the fastest time. The McLaren drivers, Bourdais , Nakajima and Heidfeld do not make the leap into the last qualifying section. The pole position finally conquered Button, who had prevailed against Trulli and Vettel.
run
The race started with the lead-in lap in dry conditions. The forecast for the onset of rain ranged from 5:15 p.m. to 5:40 p.m. MYT.
Jenson Button ( Brawn - Mercedes ) started the race from pole position. The winner of the start was Nico Rosberg in the Williams Toyota, who took the lead from fourth. Even Fernando Alonso ( Renault ) could work their way to three using KERS of Nine, the two Brawn-Mercedes had by Button and Barrichello but over soon leave again because he kg with about 15 more fuel went. Timo Glock in the Toyota dropped from three to eight at the start, Robert Kubica ( BMW Sauber ) only rolled off very slowly and had to park his car one lap later with an engine failure. Heikki Kovalainen (McLaren-Mercedes) flew off the track on the first lap and was unable to continue.
Before the first pit stops, Rosberg was in front of Trulli (Toyota), Button and Barrichello. After Rosberg pitted on lap 15 and Trulli on lap 17, Button was able to drive the fastest race lap on the open track (1: 36.641 min on lap 18) and thus defend first place after his pit stop.
Kimi Räikkönen (Ferrari), previously fifth, was fitted with rain tires during his pit stop, with which he lost a lot of time on the still dry track and which were completely ruined after a few laps (radio message to the pits: “My tires are completely destroyed. ”), So that it fell back to 14th place.
When it started to rain slightly on lap 23, the drivers had to go back to the pits to change their tires. Nick Heidfeld in the BMW Sauber and Lewis Hamilton in the McLaren-Mercedes, who had more gasoline on board and then switched to rain tires at their first stop, benefited from this . Barrichello was able to drive past Trulli and Rosberg in the rain and completed the temporary double lead for Brawn GP. The main winner of the rain, however, was Glock, who was the only one to opt for intermediates instead of rain tires and thus overtook everyone in the light rain from outside the top ten and pushed Barrichello back from second place. When the other drivers switched from wet tires to intermediates, he briefly took the lead, but was soon overtaken by Button again. Now it started to rain heavily and the drivers had to switch back to rain tires; Glock fell behind Heidfeld, who had not switched to intermediates and was still in the pits - in contrast to Button and Glock (three stops each) and most of the other drivers.
Afterwards, Glock was able to regain second place, but the conditions became more and more extreme, so that the race management dispatched the safety car after several flights. Since the racing cars continued to slide off the track despite the reduced speed, the race was interrupted only a little later with the red flag .
The teams gathered behind the red flag line on the start-finish straight , tried to protect the cars and drivers from the rain and waited for the race management's decision. After the rain subsided a little and several teams already started the engines, they decided at 6:52 p.m. MYT not to start the race due to the impending darkness. The score was counted in lap 31, Button won ahead of Heidfeld and Glock, who only learned of the reverse order on the way to the award ceremony from race director Charlie Whiting .
As at this point in time less than 75 percent of the planned race distance had been completed, the drivers placed in the points received only half the number of points. This happened for the fifth time in the history of Formula 1, the last time it happened at the 1991 Australian Grand Prix .
After the race
The teams were already skeptical about the late start time in advance. If the drivers in Melbourne complained about the low sun, the late start of the race in Sepang may have prevented the restart. While Bernie Ecclestone defended the late start, the route operators were considering an earlier start again next year. "At what time we will start next year, we do not know yet, but we will check the start time for next year's race," said Chairman of the Sepang International Circuit , Datuk Mokhzani Mahathir. Finally, the start of the race in 2010 was scheduled an hour earlier.
