The 2009 British Grand Prix took place on June 21 at the Silverstone Circuit in Silverstone and was the eighth race of the 2009 Formula 1 World Championship .
Reports
background
After the Turkish Grand Prix , Jenson Button led the drivers' standings with 26 points ahead of Rubens Barrichello and 32 points ahead of Sebastian Vettel . Brawn- Mercedes led the constructors' championship with 39.5 points ahead of Red Bull- Renault and with 63.5 points ahead of Toyota .
After McLaren- Mercedes had also expanded KERS , only Scuderia Ferrari drove with the system at Silverstone .
The Grand Prix of Great Britain was to be held for the last time on the traditional race track in Silverstone in 2009 and from 2010 onwards in Donington . However, after the end of the season it was decided that the British Grand Prix would continue to take place at Silverstone. The sporting events on the race weekend were overshadowed by an announcement by the eight FOTA teams who announced their exit from Formula 1 on Friday night.
With Barrichello, Fernando Alonso , Kimi Räikkönen and Lewis Hamilton (once each), four former winners competed for this Grand Prix.
training
In the first free practice session, Red Bull-Renault dominated the action. Vettel drove the fastest lap in front of his teammate Mark Webber . With eight tenths of a second behind, the World Cup leader Button finished third. In the second practice session, the result at the top remained unchanged: Vettel again set the fastest time ahead of Webber. Force India driver Adrian Sutil caused a small surprise with third place. In the third free practice session, Williams driver Nico Rosberg again secured a training best time. The German was followed by Kazuki Nakajima and Jarno Trulli .
Qualifying
In the first part of qualifying, Nakajima set the fastest lap. Lewis Hamilton , the Toro Rosso and Force India pilots were eliminated. In the second section, Vettel sat at the head of the field. The BMW Sauber drivers, Piquet , Kovalainen and Massa did not make the leap into the final part of qualifying, in which Vettel secured pole position ahead of Barrichello and Webber .
run
Vettel won the start of the race against a good starting Barrichello. In contrast to his team-mate, Button did not start so well and fell back to ninth place. However, he was able to improve to eighth place after an overtaking maneuver against Massa on the second lap. Nick Heidfeld was also in the focus of the initial phase . After first damaging his front wing on the McLaren by Kovalainen, he was overtaken by Giancarlo Fisichella after an attack by Alonso . However, despite several attacks, he was able to keep the Spaniard behind. He only had his front wing changed during his regular pit stop on lap 22.
Meanwhile, Vettel continued to move away from the rest of the field and was around nine seconds ahead of Barrichello in the tenth lap. The first pit stop was made by Nakajima, who was overtaken by the Finn one lap later, after Kimi Räikkönen , who was initially behind the Japanese. The Red Bull-Renault drivers were able to stay on the track the longest and so Webber overtook Barrichello with the help of a later pit stop. The leading Vettel stayed the longest of the leading group on the track and was therefore able to keep his lead even after the pit stop.
On lap 31 there was a duel between former teammates Hamilton and Alonso. First, Hamilton overtook the Spaniard, who started a counterattack a lap later and overtook Hamilton before Stowe . The duel was about 16th place. On lap 35 there was a collision between Kovalainen and Bourdais . This collision was triggered by a mix-up: Kovalainen mistook Bourdais for Webber and made room for him to lap, but the Finn recognized his mistake shortly before the maneuver was over and closed. Then the two collided. Both pilots had to give up a few laps later in the pits.
At the top, the Red Bull-Renault were able to pull away from the field and maintain their one-two lead even after the pit stops. In fourth place, Massa prevailed against Rosberg with a later stop. Behind the two was Button, who was still trying to drive past Rosberg in the last few laps. Eventually Vettel won the Grand Prix in front of his teammates Webber and Barrichello. The other points went to Massa, Rosberg, Button, Trulli and Räikkönen.
Button, who was able to confidently maintain the lead in the drivers' standings, did not take part in the award ceremony of the 2009 Grand Prix for the first time. For Vettel it was the second win of the season and the first in dry conditions. With a win, pole position and the fastest lap, the German also scored a hat trick .
With Sebastian Vettel, another driver won for the seventh time in a row.
