report
backgrounds
After the Hungarian Grand Prix , Lewis Hamilton led the drivers' standings by five points over Valtteri Bottas and 30 points over Max Verstappen . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes led with 66 points ahead of Red Bull Racing and with 80 points ahead of McLaren .
At the British Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Hard (white, compound C1 ), P Zero Medium (yellow, C2 ) and P Zero Soft (red, C3 ), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full for wet conditions -Wets (blue) available. It was the first race of the season in which the hardest mixture C1 was used. For logistical reasons, all drivers received the same number of sets of tires in the respective degrees of hardness; it was not possible to place different orders. Each driver thus had eight sets of the soft , three sets of the medium and two sets of the hard mix.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the Great Britain Grand Prix took place under strict safety and hygiene rules. No spectators were allowed, and every person who was in the paddock had to be tested for the SARS-CoV-2 virus at least every five days . After a test by Sergio Pérez before the Grand Prix did not produce a clearly negative result, he was isolated and thus missed the Thursday before the Grand Prix, which was reserved for media activities. On the same evening, the FIA announced that Pérez had tested positive and was therefore canceled for the Grand Prix. The team signed on to replace Nico Hülkenberg , who was to contest his first race in the Formula 1 World Championship since the 2019 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix .
With Hamilton (six times), Sebastian Vettel (twice) and Kimi Räikkönen (once) three former winners competed for this Grand Prix.
Race stewards were Paolo Longoni (ITA), Tim Mayer (USA), Emanuele Pirro (ITA) and Steve Stringwell (GBR).
free training
In the first free practice, Verstappen was fastest with a lap time of 1: 27.422 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Lance Stroll . Training had to be interrupted after Antonio Giovinazzi suffered a tire damage while spinning and then lost tire parts on the track.
In the second free practice session, Stroll set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 27.274 minutes ahead of Alexander Albon and Bottas. The training was interrupted for a few minutes after an accident by Albon.
In the third free practice, Bottas was fastest in 1: 25.873 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Verstappen.
Qualifying
The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. Bottas was the fastest. Nicholas Latifi and the Alfa Romeo and Haas pilots were eliminated.
The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest drivers qualified for the third part of the qualifying and had to start the race with the tires used here, everyone else had a free choice of tires for the start of the race. The Mercedes drivers, Charles Leclerc , Stroll and Verstappen posted their fastest lap times on the medium tire compound, all the others on soft . The qualifying section was interrupted because the track was covered with stones after a spin from Hamilton. Bottas was the fastest. George Russell , the AlphaTauri pilots, Hulkenberg and Albon were eliminated.
The last section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, in which the first ten starting positions were assigned. Hamilton set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 24.303 minutes ahead of Bottas and Verstappen. It was the 91st pole position for Hamilton in the Formula 1 World Championship, including the seventh at the British Grand Prix.
Daniil Kwjat was moved five positions back due to a premature gear change. Russell was moved five positions back for disregarding double-waved yellow flags .
run
Hülkenberg was unable to start on the grid due to a hydraulic problem on his vehicle. The mechanics did not manage to repair the vehicle until the start of the race, so that Hulkenberg could not take part in the race.
At the start, Hamilton remained in the lead ahead of Bottas, Leclerc briefly passed Verstappen, who countered during the first lap. At the end of the first lap, Albon and Kevin Magnussen collided , Magnussen then hit the barrier. The race management sent the safety car out onto the track to rescue the vehicle . Hamilton led before Bottas, Verstappen, Leclerc, Carlos Sainz jr. , Daniel Ricciardo , Lando Norris , Stroll, Esteban Ocon and Vettel. The race stewards punished Albon with a time penalty of five seconds.
The race was reopened at the end of the fifth lap. The positions remained unchanged at the restart. Albon switched to the hard mix at the end of the sixth lap .
On the 12th lap, Kvjat spun and hit the track barrier. The race management sent the safety car out again to rescue the vehicle. Ricciardo, Norris, Ocon, Vettel, Giovinazzi, Gasly, Russell, Raikkonen and Latifi immediately pitted to change tires, one lap later Hamilton, Bottas, Verstappen, Leclerc, Sainz and Stroll pitted. Hamilton led ahead of Bottas, Verstappen, Leclerc, Grosjean, Sainz, Ricciardo, Norris, Stroll and Vettel. At this point, Grosjean was the only driver who had not yet been in the pits to change tires. All other pilots had switched to the hard mix at this point .
At the end of the 18th lap, the race was released again. Norris passed Ricciardo at the restart and was now seventh. Ocon passed Vettel again, who had briefly passed him by a faster pit stop. Sainz put Grosjean under pressure, who initially successfully defended his position. The stewards showed him the warning flag because he had changed direction during the defensive maneuver while braking. Sainz passed on lap 22, three laps later Grosjean also had to let Norris pass.
In the 30th lap, Albon switched to medium again , serving his time penalty. Giovinazzi received a five-second time penalty for not slowing down sufficiently behind the safety car. On lap 37 Ricciardo and Stroll passed Grosjean, who then drove into the pits and switched to Hard . Gasly passed Vettel and was now tenth.
Ocon caught up with Stroll and passed him on lap 46. Stroll was also shown the warning flag afterwards, as he had changed direction when braking. Raikkonen lost part of his front wing and then drove into the pits to have it changed. Stroll lost another position to Gasly, Albon overtook Vettel.
Bottas suffered a tire damage on the 50th lap and had to drive back to the pits at a slow pace, while Verstappen passed him. Then Verstappen switched to Soft , but stayed in second place. Bottas also switched to soft and dropped back to twelfth place.
On the 51st lap, Sainz also suffered a tire damage and pitted, dropping back to 14th place. Hamilton also suffered a puncture on the final lap, but managed to save the car at the finish. Verstappen drove the fastest lap of the race on the last lap. Bottas caught up with Vettel and attacked him, but was unable to pass him before the goal.
Hamilton won the race ahead of Verstappen and Leclerc. It was Hamilton's 87th victory in the Formula 1 World Championship, including 20 start-to-finish wins. He surpassed Ayrton Senna , with whom he had shared the record with 19 start-to-finish victories. The remaining points were placed by Ricciardo, Norris, Ocon, Gasly, Albon, Stroll and Vettel. With eleventh place for Bottas, for the first time since the 2014 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, a Mercedes outside of the points crossed the finish line. For him it was also the first time that he did not finish a race in a Mercedes in the points. At the 2018 Azerbaijan Grand Prix he was ranked 14th due to the distance covered, but did not see the checkered flag. The point for the fastest race lap went to Verstappen.
In the overall standings, Hamilton extended his lead to Bottas and Verstappen. The first three positions in the team standings also remained unchanged.
