The Racing Point RP20 is the Formula 1 - racing cars of Racing Point for the Formula 1 World Championship 2020 . It is the team's second Formula 1 car. The paintwork of the car was presented on February 17, 2020 in Mondsee on the previous model , the actual vehicle made its first appearance at the start of the pre-season tests on the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on February 19, 2020.
Technology and development
Like all Formula 1 vehicles of 2020, the Racing Point RP20 is a rear-wheel drive monoposto with a monocoque made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) . In addition to the monocoque, many other parts of the vehicle, including the body parts and the steering wheel, are made of CFRP. The brake discs are also made from a composite material reinforced with carbon fibers.
The RP20 is the successor to the RP19 . Since the technical regulations for the 2020 season remained largely stable, the vehicle is largely a further development.
Of RP20 is powered by a 1.6-liter V-6 engine of Mercedes in the middle of the vehicle with turbocharger and a 120 kW strong electric motor , so it is a hybrid electric vehicle . The sequential transmission of the car comes from Mercedes and has eight gears. The gear changes are triggered with paddles on the steering wheel. The vehicle has only two pedals, an accelerator pedal (right) and a brake pedal (left). Just like many other functions, the clutch , which is only used when starting from a standstill, is operated via a lever on the steering wheel.
The vehicle is 2000 mm wide, the width between the front and rear axles is 1600 mm and the height is 950 mm. The front wing has a width of 2000 mm, the rear wing of 1050 mm and a height of 820 mm. The diffuser is 175 mm high and 1050 mm wide. The car is equipped with 305 mm wide front tires and 405 mm wide rear tires from the standard supplier Pirelli , which are mounted on 13-inch wheels.
Like all Formula 1 vehicles since 2011 , the RP20 has a Drag Reduction System (DRS), which reduces the drag of the vehicle on the straights by flattening part of the rear wing , if it is allowed to be used. The DRS is also activated with a switch on the steering wheel of the car.
The RP20 is equipped with the Halo system , which provides additional protection for the driver's head.
Following a protest by Renault at the Styrian Grand Prix against Racing Point, the FIA examined the vehicle's brake ventilation. The race stewards saw the development of the rear brake ventilation, for which legally acquired parts and construction drawings from Mercedes were used, a violation of an appendix to the sporting regulations. For each vehicle used at the Styrian Grand Prix, they pronounced a fine of 200,000 euros and a point deduction in the constructors' rating of 7.5 points. There was no violation of the technical regulations, so the vehicle may be used unchanged in the further course of the season.
Painting and sponsorship
The RP20 is mainly painted in pink, there are also color accents in magenta.
It advertise Acronis , BWT AG , Bombardier , the Grupo Carso (with Claro, a brand name in several Latin American countries for mobile networks of America Movil , which to Telmex owned Internet provider Infinitum and Telcel ), Hackett London , JCB (JCB), NEC Corporation , Pirelli and Ravenol on the vehicle. BWT also takes on the name sponsorship for the Mercedes engine, which is indicated in the entry lists as BWT Mercedes .
driver
Racing Point will compete again in the 2020 season with drivers Sergio Pérez and Lance Stroll .
In the run-up to the British Grand Prix , Pérez tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus and was therefore not allowed to take part in the Grand Prix. The team hired Nico Hülkenberg , who last drove for Renault , as a replacement . Hülkenberg replaced Pérez again at the following Grand Prix of the 70th anniversary before the Mexican returned from Spain .
