2021 season>

The 2020 Formula 1 World Championship is the 71st season of the Formula 1 World Championship . It was originally scheduled to begin on March 15th in Melbourne , Australia , and end on November 29th in Abu Dhabi . The start of the season but was on March 13 due to the COVID-19 pandemic postponed and took place in July 5 Austrian Spielberg instead.

Changes 2020

stretch

Originally foreseen calendar for 2020 occurred in the previous season to three major changes: addition of came Grand Prix of Vietnam on the Hanoi Street Circuit as a new race and the Grand Prix of the Netherlands at the Circuit Park Zandvoort , which for the first time since 1985 again should be carried out. The German Grand Prix , which was last held at the Hockenheimring , was no longer planned for the 2020 season.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , numerous Grands Prix were postponed or canceled over the course of the year, which also affected the two new races. Overall, there have been major changes compared to the originally planned calendar, which means that for the first time in the history of the Formula 1 World Championship, two races were planned on the same racetrack within one season.

Technical regulations

In order to reduce the risk of tire damage in the event of contact with a vehicle in front, no metal parts must be left on the first five centimeters of the front wing end plates. Furthermore, the brake ventilation can no longer be bought, but must be developed by the teams themselves.

The amount of fuel that can be outside the fuel tank has been reduced from two liters to 250 milliliters.

Sporting regulations

Due to the extended racing calendar, three instead of two copies of the MGU-K can now be used per driver throughout the season .

Also due to the extended racing calendar, the test drives were further restricted: the two pre-season tests on the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya were shortened from four to three days each, and the test drives during the season, with the exception of tire tests, were abolished for future seasons. The test drives after the season will continue, but each participating team must use a driver on at least one day who has contested a maximum of two races in the Formula 1 World Championship at that time. In addition, the teams are now prohibited from covering their view of the vehicles during test drives. The curfew, d. H. the time during which it is not allowed to work on the vehicles at night on the race weekend has been increased from eight to nine hours.

In the event of violations in the weighing of the vehicles or in the case of early starts, the race stewards are given more leeway with regard to sanctioning. Up until now, a driver had to start the race out of the pit lane if he ignored a request to weigh in during free practice; for an early start, the driver concerned was previously given either a drive-through penalty or a ten-second stop-and-go penalty. Go-penalty proven.

Drivers who take part in free training sessions are entitled to additional FIA super license points . Every driver who covers at least 100 km during a free practice session receives an additional super license point, provided he has no penalty points. Drivers can collect a maximum of ten super license points per year from free training sessions.

tires

Standard supplier Pirelli had designed new tires for the 2020 Formula 1 World Championship. However, after the first test drives of the new tires at the end of 2019, the teams unanimously decided to forego the new designs and use the specifications of the previous season again.

Teams

The Scuderia Toro Rosso takes from 2020 under the name Scuderia AlphaTauri at the Formula 1 World Championship in part. The new name is derived from the clothing brand of the same name of the Red Bull Group , which the team still owns.

driver

Esteban Ocon , 2019 replacement driver for Mercedes , switched to Renault , where he replaced Nico Hülkenberg . Robert Kubica left Williams after just one season. He was signed by Alfa Romeo Racing as a test and reserve driver and also competes in the DTM for the ART Grand Prix . Kubica's successor at Williams was the previous test and reserve driver Nicholas Latifi , who made his debut in the Formula 1 World Championship.

In the run-up to the British Grand Prix , Sergio Pérez tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus . So he was not allowed to take part in this and the following Grand Prix. The team signed Hülkenberg as a short-term replacement. Hülkenberg also drove in the following Grand Prix of the 70th anniversary . At the Eifel Grand Prix , Hülkenberg temporarily replaced the Lance Stroll, which tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 .

  1. At Racing Point, BWT takes on the name sponsorship for the Mercedes engines, which are therefore listed as BWT Mercedes in the registration lists. Despite the different name, the engines are identical to those used by the Mercedes works team and Williams.

Season preparation

19. – 21. February: Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya

The first week of testing took place on February 19-21 at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Spain. The test drives consisted of two daily units of four hours each, with a one-hour lunch break in between. For cost reasons, each team was only allowed to use one vehicle, but several drivers were allowed to take turns at the wheel.

All ten new cars made their track debuts in this test. At the start of the test on February 19, Lewis Hamilton in the Mercedes was fastest with a lap time of 1: 16.976 minutes ahead of his team-mate Valtteri Bottas , with whom he took turns at the wheel. Third was Sergio Pérez at Racing Point . Max Verstappen in the Red Bull covered the greatest distance with 168 laps, followed by Carlos Sainz jr. in a McLaren with 161 laps and Charles Leclerc in a Ferrari with 132 laps. The two Mercedes drivers drove 173 laps together, making Mercedes the team with the greatest distance. Lance Stroll covered the shortest distance with just 52 laps. The team with the fewest completed laps was Haas , Kevin Magnussen completed 106 laps over the entire day.

On February 20, Kimi Räikkönen was fastest in the Alfa Romeo with a lap time of 1: 17.091 minutes ahead of Pérez and Daniel Ricciardo in the Renault . Romain Grosjean covered the longest distance with 158 laps, ahead of Pierre Gasly in the AlphaTauri and Pérez. With 183 laps, Mercedes was again the team with the greatest distance, here again the two regular drivers had alternated.

On February 21, Bottas set the fastest time in 1: 15.732 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Ocon. Antonio Giovinazzi drove the greatest distance with 152 laps , followed by Stroll and Sebastian Vettel . Red Bull and Renault were the teams with the longest distance with 169 laps each. Haas drove the least again with 52 laps, Magnussen had an accident in the afternoon after only four laps due to a puncture.

26.-28. February: Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya

The second week of testing again took place on the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya from February 26th to 28th .

On February 26th, Robert Kubica was fastest with a lap time of 1: 16.942 minutes ahead of Verstappen and Pérez. Romain Grosjean drove the longest distance ahead of Bottas and Hamilton with 107 laps. Mercedes was thus the team with the most kilometers driven, both drivers together achieved 179 laps. Gasly drove the shortest distance with 25 laps. Since his teammate only drove a few laps, AlphaTauri was the team with the fewest laps.

On February 27, Vettel drove the fastest lap of the day with a time of 1: 16.841 minutes, followed by Gasly and Stroll. Nicholas Latifi covered the longest distance in the Williams with 158 laps, making Williams the most laps that day. Vettel and Gasly followed. Lewis Hamilton covered the shortest distance with just 14 laps, as he stalled on the track due to an oil pressure problem. As a result, Mercedes was the team with the fewest kilometers covered, Hamilton and Bottas drove 61 laps together.

The provisional racing calendar was presented on August 29, 2019. With 22 races, it was the most extensive in the history of the Formula 1 World Championship.

Even before the start of the season, the Chinese Grand Prix planned for April 19 was postponed indefinitely due to the COVID-19 pandemic . The Bahrain Grand Prix , planned for March 22nd, was supposed to take place behind closed doors to prevent health hazards for spectators.

Two days before the event and two hours before the start of the first free practice session, the Australian Grand Prix planned for March 15 was postponed for the same reason. On the same day, the Bahrain Grand Prix and the Vietnam Grand Prix were postponed indefinitely. A few days later the races in the Netherlands and Spain were also postponed. The Monaco Grand Prix was completely canceled by the organizer for 2020, the first time since 1954 that the Monaco Grand Prix was not held. The postponed races should be made up for at a later date.

With the increasing number of canceled races, the Formula 1 organization increased its marketing for its accompanying, official e-sports series. This virtual championship was not about points for the world championship and only individual current Formula 1 drivers, such as B. Albon, Latifi, Leclerc, Norris and Russell participated in some races. Other drivers such as Verstappen and Vettel were very critical of participating in this virtual series and therefore did not take part.

The Azerbaijan Grand Prix , scheduled for June 7, has also been postponed, as has the Canadian Grand Prix . The Australian Grand Prix was no longer planned as a "postponed" event, but rather as a canceled event.

The French Grand Prix was also completely canceled by the organizers for this year, and the Dutch Grand Prix on the converted, new racetrack in Zandvoort was postponed to 2021. The races in Azerbaijan , Singapore and Japan as well as Canada , the USA , Mexico and Brazil have also been canceled for 2020, as has the Vietnam Grand Prix .

Revised racing calendar

On June 2nd, the Formula 1 organizers published a revised racing calendar. This initially consisted of only eight races that are held on the European continent.

On July 10th, two more races were confirmed at the Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello and in Sochi .

On July 24th, three more races were confirmed at the Nürburgring , in Portimão and in Imola .

Four more races were confirmed on August 25 and the 2020 race calendar was closed. A total of 17 races will take place in 2020.

Since there are sometimes several events in one country, but only one Grand Prix named after the country's name is allowed, the additional events will be renamed. This concerns Austria ( Grand Prix of Styria ), Great Britain ( Grand Prix of the 70th anniversary of Formula 1 ), Italy ( Grand Prix of Tuscany in Mugello and Grand Prix of Emilia-Romagna in Imola) and Bahrain ( Grand Prix of Sachir ) . Although the Grand Prix at the Nürburgring is the only event in Germany, the name Grand Prix of the Eifel is used because the rights to the name of the Grand Prix of Germany lie with the AvD , but the event is organized by the ADAC .

Remarks
1Racing Point received a point deduction of 15 points (7.5 points per vehicle) in the constructors' championship at the Styrian Grand Prix as a result of a protest by Renault. The race stewards saw the development of the rear brake ventilation, for which legally acquired parts and construction drawings from Mercedes were used, as plagiarism and thus as a violation of the sporting regulations.
