Valtteri Viktor Bottas (born August 28, 1989 in Villähde , Nastola ) is a Finnish automobile racing driver . He won the Formula 3 Masters twice, in 2009 and 2010, and was champion of the GP3 series in 2011 . He has been driving in Formula 1 since 2013 , in which he started for Mercedes in 2017 .

Career

After Bottas had his first experience in motorsport in karting from 2001 to 2006 , he switched to formula racing in 2007 . Bottas finished third in the Northern European Formula Renault with two wins . He also started in the winter series of the British Formula Renault and won three of four races there. However, Bottas did not win the championship title because he lacked the necessary license. In 2008 he competed in both the Northern European Formula Renault and the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup . With a total of seventeen victories, Bottas won the championship titles of both racing series.

In 2009 Bottas competed for the ART Grand Prix in the Formula 3 Euro Series . Although he did not win a race, at the end of the season, thanks to six second places, he finished third in the overall standings and was the best newcomer of the season. He lost to his team mate Jules Bianchi with 62 to 114 points. Bottas also won the Formula 3 Masters in Zandvoort .

In 2010 Bottas stayed at ART Grand Prix and played his second season in this championship. Bottas achieved his first victory in the Formula 3 Euro Series in the sprint race at the Norisring . With another victory, he finished third overall at the end of the season. This time as the best driver in his racing team. As in the previous year, he also won the Formula 3 Masters in Zandvoort and became the first racing driver to win this race twice. In addition, he took over the post of test and substitute driver for the Formula 1 team Williams .

In 2011 Bottas stayed with his team, which started as Lotus ART in 2011 , and competed in the GP3 series for the first time . After scoring only three points on the first four race weekends, he was on the podium six times on the following four race weekends, scored four wins and took the lead in the championship, which he held until the end of the season. With 62 to 55 points, he prevailed in the championship against his teammate James Calado . He then took part in a British Formula 3 Championship race weekend , where he scored a victory, and in a 2011 FIA Formula 3 Trophy event. He also held the position of Williams test driver again. In November Bottas completed a Formula 1 test on a circuit for the first time.

In 2012 Bottas Williams remained test driver. In this role he took part in some free trainings. He made his debut in free practice at the Malaysian Grand Prix . Bottas decided against this year to race in another series in addition to his test driver engagement.

For the 2013 season Bottas made his Formula 1 racing debut as a regular Williams driver. He achieved 14th place in Australia . At the Canadian Grand Prix is Bottas qualified for the third place. In the race, however, he fell back and finished in 14th place. In the USA , Bottas made it into the top ten on the grid again. This time he managed to finish in the top 10 and scored points for the first time with an eighth place. Bottas finished the season in 17th place overall.

In 2014 Bottas got a new teammate at Williams in Felipe Massa . When the permanent Formula 1 start numbers were introduced, he chose # 77 in order to be able to use the spelling BO77AS for his name. Already at the season opener in Australia Bottas achieved his best result in Formula 1 with a fifth place. He repeated this result at the Spanish Grand Prix . At the Austrian Grand Prix , Bottas achieved his first podium finish with third place. In the following two races in Great Britain and Germany , Bottas was again on the podium in second place. In Belgium , Russia and Abu Dhabi he was again third. Bottas improved to fourth place in the world championship. With 186 to 134 points he prevailed internally against Massa.

In 2015 Bottas and Massa again formed the Williams driver duo. At the season opener in Australia , Bottas suffered a small tear in his spinal disc in qualifying. He spent one night in the hospital and was withdrawn from the race. Since then, Bottas has regularly performed special exercises for the lower back and the muscle passages there in order to avoid damage to health. He returned to the cockpit at the next race in Malaysia and finished in fifth place. In Bahrain , Bottas fought over several laps in the second half of the race against Sebastian Vettel for fourth place, in which he managed to keep Vettel behind him. At the Canadian Grand Prix , Bottas took third place, the first podium of the season. In Mexico he was also third. Bottas prevailed against Massa with 136 to 121 points and reached fifth place overall.

In 2016 Bottas completed his fourth Formula 1 season for Williams. Third place at the Canadian Grand Prix was his best result. At the Mexican Grand Prix , Bottas set a new record for the top speed of an official FIA measurement in Formula 1 with a speed of 372.5 km / h. He finished eighth in the drivers' championship.

Bottas was signed by Mercedes for the 2017 Formula 1 World Championship . Originally he had a contract with Williams for one more season, after the resignation of Nico Rosberg he changed the racing team as his successor. At Mercedes he became a team-mate of Lewis Hamilton . At the season opener in Australia he was third. He achieved his first pole position at the Bahrain Grand Prix . He finished third in the race. Then two weeks later he won his first Grand Prix in Russia . At the Azerbaijan Grand Prix he came second after an overtaking maneuver against Lance Stroll on the start-finish straight. One race later in Austria he scored his second victory. He then finished second at the British Grand Prix and third at the Hungarian Grand Prix . In Italy he was also on the podium as second. At the following Singapore Grand Prix he came third. In Mexico and Brazil , he finished second on the podium. He won the season finale, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix . At the end of the season he finished third overall.

In 2018 Bottas stayed with Mercedes. He finished second in Bahrain and China . At the subsequent Azerbaijan Grand Prix , Bottas fell out in the lead with a puncture in the closing stages. He achieved further second places in Spain , Canada and Germany . At the Italian Grand Prix he came third after a time penalty against Max Verstappen . In Russia , Bottas started from pole position after a team order in favor of Lewis Hamilton , just like in the subsequent race in Japan . At the end of the season he was on the fifth championship course.

In the 2019 Formula 1 World Championship , Bottas will again be at the start for Mercedes. He won the season opener in Australia . He then finished second in Bahrain and China . This was followed by another win in Azerbaijan , a second place in Spain and a third place in Monaco . He also came second in the French Grand Prix . In Austria he reached third place and second place at the subsequent Great Britain Grand Prix . He finished third at the Belgian Grand Prix and second in Italy and Russia . This was followed by a win in Japan and third place in Mexico . With another triumph, he was runner- up in the USA for the first time and again contributed to winning the designer's title for Mercedes. At the end of the season he was defeated by teammate Hamilton with 326 to 413 points. He nevertheless set a personal record for points. With four wins this season, he also improved his record of three wins.

The Finn will continue to drive for Mercedes in 2020 . As in the previous year, he won the season opener, which due to the COVID-19 pandemic did not take place in March in Australia , as originally planned , but in July in Austria . A week later , he came second in the Styrian Grand Prix, which was also held at the Red Bull Ring , and third in both Hungary and the 70th anniversary Grand Prix . This was followed by another third place in Spain and a second in Belgium . After the seventh race, he is currently third in the drivers' standings with 107 points.

Personal

Bottas was married to the Finnish swimmer Emilia Pikkarainen from September 2016 . On November 28, 2019, he announced the divorce from her.

On February 14, 2020, Valtteri Bottas announced in a social media post that he was in a relationship with Australian cyclist Tiffany Cromwell .
