backgrounds

After the Australian Grand Prix , Sebastian Vettel led the drivers' standings with seven points ahead of Lewis Hamilton and ten points ahead of Kimi Raikkonen . In the constructors' championship, Ferrari was ahead of Mercedes with 18 points and Red Bull Racing with 20 points .

At the Bahrain Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Medium (white), P Zero Soft (yellow) and P Zero Supersoft (red) as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

There were no structural changes to the route compared to the previous year. However , there was an adjustment to the DRS zones, the second zone was enlarged by 100 meters. The measuring point for the first zone was ten meters before curve nine , the zone itself began at the beginning of the back straight, exactly 50 meters after curve ten . The measuring point for the second DRS zone was 108 meters before turn 14 , the DRS could then be activated on the start-finish straight , now 170 instead of 270 meters after turn 15 .

Romain Grosjean , Nico Hülkenberg , Kevin Magnussen (six each), Stoffel Vandoorne (five), Carlos Sainz jr. (four), Raikkonen, Max Verstappen , Vettel (three each), Marcus Ericsson , Hamilton, Daniel Ricciardo (two each) and Lance Stroll (one) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

With Vettel, Fernando Alonso (three times each) and Hamilton (twice), three former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

Vettel contested his 200th race in the Formula 1 World Championship at this Grand Prix. Valtteri Bottas contested his 100th Grand Prix weekend, but only his 99th race, as he had not started the 2015 Australian Grand Prix due to a back injury.

Race stewards were Mazen Al Hilli (BRN), Gerd Ennser (DEU), Paolo Longoni (ITA) and Danny Sullivan (USA).

free training

In the first free practice, Ricciardo set the fastest time in 1: 31.060 minutes ahead of Bottas and Raikkonen.

In the second free practice, Raikkonen was fastest in 1: 29.817 minutes ahead of Vettel and Bottas.

Räikkönen was also fastest in the third free practice with a lap time of 1: 29.868 minutes ahead of Verstappen and Ricciardo.

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. The segment was interrupted by Verstappen after an accident. Raikkonen was fastest. The Williams, the Sauber pilots and Grosjean were eliminated.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Vettel was fastest. Hamilton set his best time on the soft mix, all other pilots on supersoft . Verstappen, who could no longer drive in the first segment after his accident, the McLaren drivers, Sergio Pérez and Brendon Hartley were eliminated.

The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. With a lap time of 1: 27.958 minutes, Vettel set the fastest time ahead of Raikkonen and Bottas. It was the 51st pole position for Vettel and the fastest lap time ever on this track.

Hamilton was moved five starting positions back because the gearbox on his car was changed prematurely.

run

Peréz passed Hartley on the warm-up lap. Since he did not let it pass again, he was given a drive-through penalty after the race, which was converted into a 30-second time penalty. Since Hartley had not resumed his position until the safety car line , he would have had to go into the pit lane at the end of the introductory lap in accordance with the sporting regulations. He failed to do this and instead took his regular starting position. Hartley was also given a drive-through penalty after the race, which was converted into a 30-second time penalty. He also received two penalty points.

At the start, Vettel stayed in the lead, followed by Bottas Räikkönen, and Pierre Gasly passed Ricciardo. In the duel between Magnussen and Hülkenberg there was a contact, but this had no major consequences. Esteban Ocon took the opportunity and passed Hulkenberg. In the back of the field there was another contact between Hartley and Pérez. Pérez spun and fell back to the bottom of the field, Hartley was given a ten-second time penalty and received two penalty points.

Meanwhile, Alonso overtook Hamilton, who was now just ahead of Verstappen, who had also made up some positions. At the end of the first lap, Vettel was leading in front of Bottas, Raikkonen, Ricciardo, Gasly, Magnussen, Ocon, Hülkenberg, Alonso and Hamilton. On the start-finish straight, Verstappen attacked Hamilton and overtook him. Verstappen drifted far out into the first corner, where Hamilton was. The two vehicles touched. Verstappen suffered a tire damage on the left rear and fell back to the end of the field before pitting at the end of the lap to change tires. Shortly afterwards Ricciardo parked his car at the edge of the track with an electrical fault.

The race management called out a virtual safety car so that Ricciardo's vehicle could be recovered safely. The race was reopened on the fourth lap. Magnussen attacked Gasly but couldn't get past. Hülkenberg overtook Ocon directly behind and was now seventh again. This overtaking maneuver enabled Alonso and Hamilton to catch up.

On the start-finish straight, Hamilton overtook Alonso, Hülkenberg and Ocon, while Alonso also passed Ocon. Meanwhile, Verstappen parked his car on the side of the road. Hamilton quickly moved away from the combat group and soon overtook Magnussen and then Gasly. In the meantime, the positions at the front were clearly defined, with several seconds between all drivers.

Magnussen drove to the pits as the first pilot in the points on lap 13 and switched to Supersoft again . One lap later Alonso switched to Medium , another lap later Gasly, Hulkenberg and Ocon each switched to Soft .

In the 18th lap, Vettel switched to Soft , so Bottas took the lead. One lap later, Raikkonen also switched to soft . On the 20th lap, Bottas changed tires, but switched to medium . Meanwhile, Hamilton was leading ahead of Vettel, who however quickly reduced the gap with the much fresher tires. Ericsson, who had moved up to seventh place, switched to medium on lap 23 .

In the 26th lap, Vettel passed Hamilton, who then drove into the pits and switched to medium . One lap later, Magnussen, the first driver, changed tires for the second time, this time to soft . On lap 34, Gasly also changed tires for the second time.

Räikkönen pitted again on lap 35, the mechanics had another set of Supersoft ready. However, there was a problem with the rear left tire that could not be resolved. All three other tires had already been changed and Raikkonen received the signal to drive off. He ran over the leg of the mechanic who the Supersoft held -Hinterreifen still in his hands. The mechanic suffered fractures of the tibia and fibula, and Raikkonen was ordered to park the car immediately after driving off. The race stewards fined Ferrari for the unsafe release with a fine of 50,000 euros.

Hülkenberg and Alonso changed tires again on lap 39 and fell behind Ericsson, who was now in sixth place. However, they quickly caught up with him, Hulkenberg passed him on lap 44. One lap later, Alonso also overtook Ericsson.

Bottas and Hamilton meanwhile shortened the gap to Vettel. On lap 53, Vandoorne also passed Ericsson. Bottas was significantly faster than Vettel, whose tires now deteriorated significantly. In the last lap Bottas came within striking distance for the first time to start an attack, which Vettel was able to fend off.

Vettel won the race ahead of Bottas and Hamilton. It was the 49th victory for Vettel in the Formula 1 World Championship. Bottas scored his first and Hamilton his second podium finish of the season. The remaining points were placed by Gasly, Magnussen, Hülkenberg, Alonso, Vandoorne, Ericsson and Ocon. For Gasly it was the best result in the Formula 1 World Championship to date, and it was also the best place for a driver with a Honda engine since the 2008 British Grand Prix . Ericsson scored points in the Formula 1 World Championship for the first time since the 2015 Italian Grand Prix .

Vettel thus increased his lead over Hamilton in the overall standings, Bottas was now third. Ferrari stayed ahead of Mercedes in the constructors' championship and McLaren was now third .
