The Ferrari SF71H was the 51th Formula 1 race car of the Scuderia Ferrari . The team contested the 2018 Formula 1 World Championship with the vehicle .
Presentation and name
The SF71H was presented in Maranello on February 22nd, 2018 .
The designation of the car is made up of the abbreviation of the team name, SF, the number 71 as a reference to the 71-year existence of the company and the abbreviation for hybrid electric vehicle .
Technology and development
Like all Formula 1 vehicles of 2018, the Ferrari SF71H is a rear-wheel drive monoposto with a monocoque made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) . In addition to the monocoque, many other parts of the vehicle, including the body parts and the steering wheel, are made of CFRP. The brake discs are also made from a heat-resistant carbon fiber reinforced composite material.
Since the technical regulations for the 2018 season remained largely stable, the SF71H has largely been developed further from the predecessor model Ferrari SF70H .
The SF71H is powered by a 1.6-liter V6 mid-engine of Ferrari with a turbocharger and a 120 kW strong electric motor , so it is a hybrid electric vehicle . The car's sequential gearbox has eight gears. The gear change is triggered by paddles on the steering wheel. The vehicle has only two pedals, an accelerator pedal (right) and a brake pedal (left). Just like many other functions, the clutch , which is only needed when starting from a standstill, is operated via a lever on the steering wheel.
The vehicle is 2000 mm wide, the width between the front and rear axles is 1600 mm and the height is 950 mm. The front wing is 1800 mm wide , the rear wing is 950 mm wide and 800 mm high. The diffuser has a total height of 175 mm and a width of 1050 mm. The car has 305 mm wide front tires and 405 mm wide rear tires on 13-inch wheels. Pirelli is the single supplier of tires for all teams .
Like all Formula 1 vehicles, the SF71H has had a Drag Reduction System (DRS) since 2011 , which reduces the aerodynamic drag of the vehicle on the straights by flattening part of the rear wing if it is allowed to be used. The DRS is activated with a switch on the steering wheel of the car.
Unlike its predecessor, the SF71H is equipped with the Halo system , which provides additional protection for the driver's head. This system increases the weight of the vehicle to 733 kg. The upper edge of the component was clad with an air guide element, which is intended to reduce the resulting air turbulence and thus ensure a better flow of air to the air inlet above the cockpit. The eye-catching fin on the engine cover that the previous model had is missing due to a change in the technical regulations. In addition, the wheelbase of the car has been increased by around ten centimeters.
Particularly noticeable are the rear-view mirrors of the car, the front sides of which are provided with openings that direct air through the housing and around the mirror in order to better flow to the top of the side pods, where there is an additional air inlet for the coolers.
At the Spanish Grand Prix , the SF71H was fitted with new exterior mirrors attached to the Halo system. Since there was also a wing element above the mirror, which, according to Ferrari, served to stabilize the mirror, the FIA declared this solution to be illegal, since otherwise an arms race with such wing elements was feared. Ferrari was only allowed to use this design for the Spanish Grand Prix. At the Monaco Grand Prix , the mirrors were then attached to the Halo system without the wing element.
Painting and sponsorship
The SF71H is mainly painted in red, supplemented by gray elements on the front and rear wings, among other things. The fin on the engine cover is painted white and has a red and a green stripe to symbolize the flag of Italy .
AMD , Hublot , Kaspersky Lab , Lenovo , Mahle , Pirelli, Ray-Ban , Shell , Singha , United Parcel Service and Weichai Power advertise on the vehicle.
driver
Ferrari will also compete in the 2018 season with drivers Kimi Räikkönen and Sebastian Vettel , who will be contesting their fourth season together.
