The Ferrari F2002 , or by the media and Red Goddess called, was the 35th Formula 1 - racing cars of the Scuderia Ferrari . He took part in 15 of the 17 races of the Formula 1 World Championship in 2002 , after starting the season with last year's car, the F2001. In addition, the first four races of the 2003 Formula 1 World Championship were driven with the F2002. With this racing car Michael Schumacher defended his world championship title and Ferrari the constructors' championship.

Painting and sponsorship

The F2002 was painted in classic Ferrari red. The main sponsor was the cigarette maker Philip Morris International with its Marlboro brand . Shell , Vodafone , AMD and the tire supplier Bridgestone were also represented as sponsors, as was the Ferrari parent company Fiat .

Nothing was changed in the driver duo Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello . In addition, neither driver was replaced by another driver in a race. Test drivers were Luca Badoer and Luciano Burti .

Season course

2002

Late start of the season and team order

After the season started with the Ferrari F2001 , the F2002 made its debut in Brazil . However, since only one chassis was ready for use, Rubens Barrichello had to wait one more race before the European season opener in San Marino . Schumacher won the season opener in Australia in F2001 and came third in Malaysia. Barrichello was always eliminated in the first three races in F2001.

The first three races in the new car showed that the F2002 was a successful car. Michael Schumacher won all three races and was the big favorite for the title after five races and already 21 points ahead. Barrichello also made it clear how strong the Ferrari was with a second place in San Marino. At the start of the introductory lap for the Spanish Grand Prix, however, he did not get going and he was unable to start the race.

In the following race in Austria there was a scandal. After Barrichello was in the lead for the entire race, the team requested Schumacher shortly before the end of the race. Schumacher himself didn't understand this decision, but team boss Jean Todt justified himself : “In the past we lost the drivers' championship three times in a row in the last race, and we know that we have tough opponents. That's why we have to get the most out of every situation. "

Way to the title

At the Monaco Grand Prix, Schumacher's winning streak was torn, he finished second. Barrichello drove in seventh place, the worst result of the season. At the following race in Canada, Juan Pablo Montoya destroyed a one-two and finished second behind Schumacher. The two races that followed were, however, again double victories for Ferrari.

At the French Grand Prix , Schumacher won again and thus secured his fifth world title six races to go. It was the earliest World Cup decision to date. Barrichello did not take part in this race because his Ferrari was not lowered from the jack at the start of the introductory lap and it was not possible to drive off before the start of the race.

In the following race in Germany, Scuderia Ferrari secured the 12th constructors' title.

Dominance to the end

In the remaining five races, Ferrari achieved five one-two victories. Michael Schumacher was on the podium in every race. He increased both the record of wins in one season from nine to eleven and the record of points in one season from 123 to 144.

2003

Start of the season with problems

Ferrari drove the first four races of the 2003 season with the F2002. The winning streak could not be continued seamlessly and only one race was won. In Australia, a driving mistake prevented Schumacher from winning. In Brazil, both Ferrari drivers failed to cross the finish line in difficult weather conditions. A total of 32 points were achieved, which meant second place in the constructors' championship. Schumacher was third in the drivers' standings, Barrichello fifth.

The whereabouts of the racing cars

Examples of the Ferrari F2002 can be viewed today, for example, in the Ferrari Museum in Maranello and in the Michael Schumacher Private Collection in Motorworld Cologne .

At a Sotheby’s auction on November 30, 2019 in Abu Dhabi , the Ferrari F2002 with chassis number 219 was auctioned for 5.9 million US dollars (= approx. 5.32 million euros ). Michael Schumacher won with this vehicle including the Grand Prix of San Marino , the Grand Prix of Austria and the French Grand Prix - with that triumph, he secured his fifth world title already six races remaining.
