The Ferrari F2001 was the 34th Formula 1 - racing cars of the Scuderia Ferrari . It took part in all 17 races of the 2001 Formula 1 season and the first three races of the 2002 Formula 1 season , and was powered by a Ferrari V10 engine. With this racing car Michael Schumacher defended his world championship title and Ferrari the constructors' championship.
technology
The F2001 was developed for the changes in the regulations prescribed at the beginning of the season, which stipulate a higher-mounted front wing section in order to reduce downforce. This led to the distinctive "droopsnoot" nasal area (which in German can perhaps best be translated as "hanging nose") and a new, spoon-shaped front wing. This season the traction and take-off control systems were also reintroduced, which is why the car and its chassis were designed with these criteria in mind.
Ferrari again installed the periscope exhaust systems developed by the team in 1998 and the small bargeboards (side wings), which were already a feature of the previous models. The F2001 was equipped with the same transmission as its predecessor. However, aerodynamic efficiency and tire wear have been significantly improved over the F300 (1998), F399 (1999) and F1-2000 (2000).
Adjusting the cars to the respective routes was easier and faster than with the competitors McLaren MP4-16 and Williams FW23 . The Ferrari was also significantly more reliable than its competitors when it came to engines.
Painting and sponsorship
Like its predecessors since 1997, the F2001 was painted in a lighter red than the classic Rosso Corsa . The main sponsor was the cigarette maker Philip Morris with its Marlboro brand . The tobacco advertising ban in F1, which was not valid worldwide at the time , forced the teams at some races in countries where the ban was already in place to resort to rather creative changes to the existing brandings .
Smaller sponsor spaces included Tic Tac , FedEx , Magneti Marelli , General Electric, and TIM . Shell and the tire supplier Bridgestone were also represented as sponsors.
On the weekend immediately after the terrorist attacks of September 11th, Ferrari refrained from any sponsorship advertising for the Italian Grand Prix as a token of sympathy. The vehicles were painted a single color red, the driver's suits without patches. Only the nose of the vehicle was painted black in memory of the victims and out of sympathy.
driver
The driver duo Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello did not change. In addition, neither driver was replaced by another driver in a race. The only test driver was Luca Badoer .
2001 season
The F2001 was the dominant vehicle of the 2001 season. With it 9 victories were achieved (all by Schumacher), including 3 double victories. In every race there was at least one driver on the podium, Schumacher and Barrichello were on the podium together six times, and in three races they achieved double victories.
In addition to its speed, the F2001 was also characterized by its reliability. Only six times did one of the pilots fail to cross the finish line (two Schumacher, four Barrichello), with Barrichello not failing until the penultimate lap of the US Grand Prix , but still being ranked 15th. The only one who was more reliable this season was Jean Alesi , who only retired once in all races as a driver for Prost and Jordan .
2002 season
Ferrari started the 2002 season with the F2001. In the first two races, both drivers drove the previous year's model. In the third race, Schumacher switched to the F2002 , Barrichello only switched to the new racing car one race later.
