The Ferrari 312T3 was a Formula 1 racing car that Scuderia Ferrari used in the Formula 1 World Championship in 1978 and 1979.
Development history
The Ferrari 312T3 was the successor to the T2 , with Carlos Reutemann at the beginning of the season 1978 the Brazilian Grand Prix had won.
The racing car had a less rounded body shape than the previous model, a new monocoque and a new front suspension that was matched to the Michelin tires. The car was fast, but too prone to defects compared to the two factory Lotus 79s owned by Mario Andretti and Ronnie Peterson , which dominated the season. The 312T3 was also not a ground-effect racing car, as the Lotus 78 was in perfect form. Ferrari repeatedly tested the suction effect achieved by side skirts during the season, but the modifications were not used until the beginning of 1979. The new vehicle was then called the T4 .
Racing history
Carlos Reutemann won the two US Grand Prix and the Grand Prix of Great Britain with the 312T3 in 1978 , while the Canadian Gilles Villeneuve won his home Grand Prix . In the drivers' world championship, Reutemann was third overall and Villeneuve ninth in the final ranking. In the constructors' cup, the Scuderia finished second behind Lotus .
Built copies
A total of 5 copies were built:
- 312 T3 / 032. Use in three races, one with Villeneuve and two with Reutemann (victory in Long Beach).
- 312 T3 / 033. 5 races with Reutemann in 1978, only once victoriously entered by Villeneuve in the 1979 Race of Champions .
- 312 T3 / 034. From the Long Beach race it was driven by Villeneuves. He used it 12 times in 1978 (victory in Canada) and 1979 in Brazil.
- 312 T3 / 035. Used 5 times by Reutemann 1978 (victory in the US Grand Prix) and by Scheckter in the first two races in 1979.
- 312 T3 / 036. Was used in the last European races in 1978 by Reutemann and 1979 by Villeneuve in Argentina.
A chassis from the 312 T3 was used in 1979 to test an innovative semi-automatic transmission designed by Mauro Forghieri. With buttons on the steering wheel, the car drove 100 laps in various tests with good time results, but was not appreciated by Canadian driver Gilles Villeneuve. As a result, development was abandoned, and it wasn't until 1989 that a semi-automatic transmission debuted in the race, again this time in a Ferrari: the 640 F1.
