The Ferrari F310B was a Formula 1 racing car that Scuderia Ferrari used in the 1997 Formula 1 World Championship.

Technology and development

The engine of the vehicle: Ferrari 046/2

The F310B was developed by John Barnard and was a further development of the previous year's Ferrari F310 . During the 1997 season, Rory Byrne developed the car further, as Barnard left the Scuderia before the start of the season. The F310B showed similarities to last year's world champion Williams FW18 , which was particularly noticeable on the front and rear wings. The Tipo 046/2, a 3.0 liter V10 naturally aspirated engine, was used as the engine. At 16,500 rpm, this produces around 750 hp or 551 kW. This enables the car to reach a top speed of 340 km / h.

Racing history

Michael Schumacher celebrates his second place in the 1997 German Grand Prix

For the first time since 1991 Ferrari was able to fight for the world title and keep the world championship open until the last race in Jerez. As in the previous year, Williams was the strongest force, but the main competitor for the world title was not Damon Hill , who had switched to Arrows , but Jacques Villeneuve . Before the last race, the European Grand Prix, Schumacher led the world championship. After Schumacher had led over half of the race, he slowed down significantly for no apparent reason and Villeneuve was able to catch up. When he started to overtake, there was a collision, as in 1994 between Schumacher and Hill. While the question of guilt was not clear at the time, this time there was little doubt that Schumacher had provoked the clash. In contrast to Hill in 1994, however, Villeneuve was able to continue the race and finished third behind the McLaren-Mercedes , which was enough to become world champion. Schumacher retired after the collision. He was excluded from the World Championship ranking due to a ruling by the FIA for unsporting behavior. In the constructors' championship, however, the points achieved by Schumacher were not withdrawn, so that Ferrari took second place.

Painting and sponsorship

The car was painted completely red. Compared to the previous year, a lighter, sponsor-friendly Marlboro red was chosen. The side pods advertised the gasoline supplier Shell as well as Asprey and Pioneer .

driver

As in the previous season, the F310B was driven by Michael Schumacher and Eddie Irvine . Gianni Morbidelli and Nicola Larini were nominated as test drivers . During this season, both also drove as drivers for Sauber .
