training
Friday training
Eddie Irvine set the fastest time with 1: 38.903, ahead of Ralf Schumacher by eight thousandths. Michael Schumacher and Jacques Villeneuve finished ten and eleven, one and a half seconds behind.
All drivers were within seven and a half seconds.
Saturday training
Ralf Schumacher set the fastest time ahead of Mika Häkkinen , Giancarlo Fisichella , Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Jacques Villeneuve . Michael Schumacher was again ranked tenth.
In the first session on Saturday, a strange accident occurred after 30 minutes: Jos Verstappens Tyrrell got stuck due to a lack of fuel. The yellow flag was waved because of the car, which was ignored by nine drivers, including Michael Schumacher and Jacques Villeneuve, who also set his fastest time. Villeneuve's violation of the rules in particular had decisive consequences: as he had repeatedly ignored yellow flags over the course of the season, another violation threatened him with a race suspension. Such was finally pronounced against him.
All drivers were within four seconds.
Qualifying
Jacques Villeneuve set the fastest time ahead of Michael Schumacher. They were followed by Irvine, Häkkinen as well as Gerhard Berger and Heinz-Harald Frentzen.
All drivers were within four and a half seconds.
Warm-up
Mika Häkkinen set the fastest time with 1: 38.113 in front of Ralf Schumacher, Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Michael Schumacher.
All drivers were within six seconds.
run
Jacques Villeneuve was excluded from the race after ignoring the yellow flags again. After an objection from Williams he was allowed to participate in the race with reservations.
The race was relatively unspectacular, only the many engine damage caused a stir. The two Mugen Honda, two Hart, one Ford and one Mercedes engines gave up the ghost during the race. Michael Schumacher just won the race, closely followed by his compatriot Frentzen in second place. Villeneuve finished the race in fifth place, but was subsequently disqualified after the objection to his exclusion from the race had been rejected. As a result, he lost the World Cup lead to Schumacher. Williams won the constructor title early anyway.
