report
background
Jacques Villeneuve leads the drivers 'world championship with 20 points ahead of Michael Schumacher , who is six points behind the Canadian, while the Williams also lead in the constructors' world championship ahead of Ferrari by six points.
During the weekend, several Formula 1 items, including racing overalls and the drivers' helmets, were auctioned for children in need in Africa and Asia.
Ferrari arrived with an improved engine, which was only used for the first time on Saturday for qualifying.
It was the first rain race this season.
training
Thursday training
Unlike the other races, the first practice session takes place on Thursday and not on Friday. The second training takes place on Saturdays as usual.
The best time was surprisingly achieved by Johnny Herbert in the Sauber with a 1: 21.188. Close behind was the Ferrari of Michael Schumacher and the Williams of Jacques Villeneuve . All but one driver were within four seconds, only Ukyo Katayama in the Minardi set a time of 1: 39.353, around 18 seconds slower than the first.
Qualifying
Heinz-Harald Frentzen in the Williams was able to secure the pole position, only around 19 thousandths ahead of Michael Schumacher. The only one over 1:21 is Jos Verstappen in the Tyrrell . All drivers were within three seconds.
Warm-up
The two Williams got the first two places in this session. This session took place in the dry.
run
It started raining around 30 minutes before the start of the race. Contrary to the currently prevailing weather, Williams decided to start with dry tires anyway, because they hoped the weather situation would improve. Later it turned out that it was a mistake, because intense rain set in during the warm-up lap.
Michael Schumacher was able to quickly take the lead at the start, while the Williams had to fight with their cars. On lap five the German had a lead of 22 seconds, followed by the Jordans , who were also prepared for rain . But both Jordans were soon overtaken by Rubens Barrichello , as the Stewart's Bridgestone rain tire worked much better than Goodyear's . From the point of view of the Arrows , the race started catastrophically: Both started on slicks, which resulted in Pedro Diniz slipping into the wall at the start. Damon Hill fared no better, colliding with Mika Häkkinen a lap later .
While Schumacher was able to continuously expand his lead, his most dangerous opponents were eliminated: Villeneuve and Frentzen both collided with the wall after they also picked up rain tires.
Since the two-hour mark would have been exceeded by far due to the rain during the planned 78 laps, the race was flagged on lap 62. Schumacher, with a lead of 53 seconds, significantly reduced the pace in order to cross the finish line exactly after the second hour and thus save another lap. It was the first Ferrari victory in Monaco since the 1981 race in which Gilles Villeneuve surprisingly won.
It is noteworthy that Mika Salo did not have to make a single pit stop in the Tyrrell , even though he had badly damaged his front wing in the early stages of the race. As a result, he managed to finish fifth. The two points scored in this way should become the final points for the Tyrrell team.
