Reports
background
The only change in the field of participants compared to the French Grand Prix two weeks earlier was the participation of Corrado Fabi instead of his brother Teo Fabi in the second Brabham alongside the reigning world champion Nelson Piquet .
training
McLaren driver Alain Prost , who has been leading the World Championship ranking since the season opener in Brazil, qualified for pole position ahead of Nigel Mansell in a Lotus and the two Ferrari 126C4s driven by René Arnoux and Michele Alboreto . The two Renault drivers Derek Warwick and Patrick Tambay formed the third row in front of Andrea de Cesaris and Niki Lauda .
Martin Brundle had a serious accident with his Tyrrell 012 in the area of the Tabac curve, but was uninjured.
For safety reasons, only 20 starters were allowed to race on the narrow street course. This inevitably resulted in seven pilots failing to qualify.
run
Since it was raining persistently on the morning of the race day, it was decided to postpone the start by 45 minutes in the hope that the weather would improve. Although this did not occur, the race was finally started. The two Renault drivers collided in the first corner and retired. Tambay also suffered a broken leg. Meanwhile, Prost had defended his top position against Mansell and was leading the race.
Niki Lauda, who started from eighth place, overtook both Ferraris by the sixth lap and thus took third place. On the eleventh lap, Mansell passed Prost and took the lead. However, when he was eliminated five laps later due to an accident, there was a McLaren one-two lead for the second time this season. At Toleman , the tire outfitter's change from Pirelli to Michelin made itself felt. With favorable Michelin rain tires, Ayrton Senna , who started from 13th place, moved up to third place by lap 16. On the 19th lap he overtook second-placed Lauda and from then on steadily reduced the lead of the leading Prost, who had braking problems. When Lauda had an accident on lap 24 in the casino curve, at least a second place for the Brazilian in the defeated Toleman seemed certain.
Stefan Bellof also caused a stir , whose team Tyrrell was one of the few who still used naturally aspirated engines and was therefore not one of the favorites. The German, who started the race from last place, fought his way up to fourth place by the 24th lap. On lap 27 he overtook Arnoux and was thus in third place behind Prost and Senna. Elio de Angelis and Keke Rosberg followed in fifth and sixth .
On lap 31 the race was stopped with the red flag. Racing director Jacky Ickx , who at the time was under contract as a works driver at Porsche , justified this decision solely with the unfavorable weather conditions. In fact, these had deteriorated several times during the race, but also improved briefly in the meantime. Ickx was accused of abandoning the race due to the fact that Senna and Bellof were catching up on Prost, thereby jeopardizing the victory of a Porsche-powered driver.
Since less than half of the planned race distance had been completed, the World Championship points to be awarded were halved. When the Tyrrell team was excluded from the World Championship towards the end of the season, all the pilots who had reached the finish line after Stefan Bellof moved up one place. Thus Michele Alboreto subsequently received half a world championship point.
Ironically, it turned out at the end of the season that Ickx 'decision had ultimately harmed Alain Prost rather than good: Prost received 4.5 points for winning a shortened race. For a likely second place (behind Senna) in a full race, however, Prost would have received 6 points. At the end of the season Prost was only 0.5 points behind Niki Lauda and without the decision to abandon the race would have surpassed Lauda with a second place.
