report
background
After the San Marino Grand Prix , some teams put in test days, for example Ferrari and Minardi tested in Fiorano , McLaren and Prost tested in Magny-Cours and Jordan tried out new aerodynamic parts with driver Andrew Gilbert-Scott in Lurcy-Lévis . Luca Badoer came to this race weekend with a minor hand injury.
training
Thursday training
For the first time this season a team other than McLaren set the fastest lap time: Michael Schumacher beat his competitor for the World Championship Häkkinen by almost 13 hundredths with a time of 1: 22.718, followed by Panis, Irvine, Fisichella and Coulthard. Heinz-Harald Frentzen had problems with the set-up of the car during the session and only achieved 19th place with a time of 1: 26.336. All drivers were placed within five and a half seconds.
Saturday training
With a time of 1: 21.249, Michael Schumacher set the fastest lap time ahead of Irvine, Häkkinen and Barrichello. Coulthard could not match the times and only reached 13th place, just under two seconds behind. All drivers were placed within four seconds.
Qualifying
Häkkinen took pole position with 1: 20.547 in front of Michael Schumacher, who reached second place by 64 thousandths. This is followed by Coulthard, Irvine, Barrichello and Frentzen. Alexander Wurz reached tenth place, around one and a half seconds behind the best time. Marc Gené's rear wing tore off after exiting the tunnel and caused a serious accident, but Gené was able to get out unharmed. All drivers were placed within four and a half seconds.
Warm-up
In the warm-up before the race, Michael Schumacher was half a second faster than his teammate Irvine, Häkkinen and Coulthard with a time of 1: 23.792. Except for Takagi, who had problems with his car, all drivers were within seven seconds.
run
On the warm-up lap, Villeneuve's engine caused problems as it threatened to overheat and Diniz and Gené lost fluids on the grid. As in the previous race, Häkkinen drove a very quick introductory lap.
At the start Michael Schumacher was able to drive away better than Häkkinen and took the lead through the outside of the curve after the Sainte Devote , followed by Häkkinen, Irvine, Coulthard, Barrichello and Frentzen. Both Ferraris were able to make up one place after the start. This constellation remained until lap 35 when Coulthard slowed down due to transmission problems and later had to retire. Irvine, who was still stuck behind Häkkinen, took advantage of Coulthard's failure for an early pit stop. On lap 32 Herbert's rear suspension broke before turn five, but a quick reaction prevented an accident and was able to park the Stewart safely. On the same lap, Villeneuve also gave up because of an oil leak. Salo's second BAR also had to give up on lap 36 after an accident at turn six. Salo already lost in the curve before that, the Mirabeau , Öl, where Häkkinen slipped on lap 38 and lost several seconds of time. As a result, Irvine, who had meanwhile done one stop more than Häkkinen, was able to pull into Häkkinen within two seconds. On lap 41 Michael Schumacher made his only pit stop undisturbed, the standing time was 9.9 seconds. Even after his stop, the runner-up Häkkinen was around 20 seconds behind.
Thanks to Häkkinen's pit stop, Irvine was able to achieve second place and stayed there until the end of the race. This race was the first one-two for Ferrari. Häkkinen took third place and rounded off the podium. At the podium ceremony, the Irish flag was incorrectly used instead of the Union Jack for runner-up Irvine . The trophy for the winner Michael Schumacher was from Rainier III. , the ruling Prince of Monaco. Jean Todt accepted the trophy for the victorious Ferrari designer from Michel Boeri , chairman of the Monaco automobile club .
