The Pista di Fiorano is a private racetrack owned by Ferrari . It is located in Fiorano Modenese , near Ferrari's main plant in Maranello , and is mainly used as a development and test track.
The original route opened in 1972 and was 8.4 m wide and 3 km long. A chicane added in 1992 extended it to 3,021 km. In 1996 the route was revised again and shortened by 24 m. In a Formula 1 car, an average speed of 190 km / h and a top speed of 290 km / h can be achieved on the route. As the track is a test track, it has many different types of turns, ranging in length from 13.71 m to 370 m. This makes it possible to simulate curve and track types on other racetracks.
In addition, the track is equipped with telemetry sensors and a large sling plate for testing tires. In order to be able to simulate the conditions of a wet road, an irrigation system was installed in 2001 that collects rainwater in eight cisterns. Although the route is closed to the public, it can be partially viewed from the roads that pass by. This means that Formula 1 test drives are often followed by Tifosi off the track.
Ferrari customers are allowed to test drive their cars on the course. The Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano is also named after the track.
In the 16 years from the track's opening to his death, Enzo Ferrari was often either in his house, which is within the track, or right on the track to watch the cars as they test drives. According to legend, the real reason for building the track was that the company's founder wanted to enjoy his cars and drivers in peace and quiet, without the presence of other Formula 1 cars or the press. In reality, the track was built because the previous Ferrari test track, the Aerautodromo di Modena, no longer met its requirements.
