The Maserati MC12 is an Italian supercar made by Maserati and technically closely related to the Ferrari Enzo Ferrari , as Maserati worked with Ferrari during the development of the MC12. The MC12's engine is based on that of the Ferrari Enzo, but has 20 kW (27 hp) less. Otherwise the lighter and more aerodynamically designed MC12 would have better performance than the Enzo.
Model history
It was launched as a homologation model for the FIA GT championship , in a limited number of 50. MC12 stands for M aserati C orse 12 cylinder.
Originally only 25 vehicles were to be built. This would have complied with the regulations of the FIA GT Championship, which stipulate the production of at least 25 street-legal vehicles for a new vehicle in the GT1 category (largest sports car class). These 25 vehicles were completed at the end of 2004 and by then they had all been sold. However, there were still enough potential customers that Maserati launched another 25 vehicles due to the high demand.
Originally, the street version should only be available in mother-of-pearl with blue sills. This paintwork is intended to be reminiscent of old Maserati racing cars from the 1950s. However, some customers were able to influence Maserati and so three cars are known in other colors: one in silver, one in dark gray and one in dark blue.
Special models
MC12 GT1
The racing version Maserati MC12 GT1 clearly won the FIA GT World Championship in its class in the 2005 season thanks to its technical superiority (the production version is derived from the racing model, with most competitors the opposite is true).
In the 2006 season, Maserati was again at the forefront with the Vitaphone Racing Team led by Michael Bartels and Andrea Bertolini . They won both the team and the driver standings. In August they won the Spa-Francorchamps 24-hour race once again and this year they even set the record for the most kilometers covered in racing in 83 years.
MC12 Corse version
To celebrate the victory of the FIA GT World Championship in 2005, a second series was launched, the MC12 Versione Corse . This special model, limited to 14 units, was sold to selected customers at a price of 1.2 million euros. However, Maserati kept three of the 14 copies for test purposes or as press vehicles. In contrast to the “normal” MC12, the Corse version was only offered in “Victory Blue” from the factory, but could also be painted in a different color upon customer request.
The MC12 Versione Corse has the 555 kW (755 PS) engine from the MC12 GT1 and, with the exception of two copies, is not street legal. In contrast to the MC12 GT1, the Corsa is not for racing use, but exclusively for private events such as B. so-called TrackDays thought. Similar to Ferrari with the FXX , the manufacturer takes care of the transport, maintenance and repair of the vehicles.
