Supercar
Super sports car is a not clearly defined term for particularly expensive sports cars that offer outstanding driving performance and whose properties are much more geared towards performance than comfort and suitability for everyday use. Super sports cars are therefore usually sparsely equipped like racing cars , with exceptions, however, sometimes also luxurious. The term came up in the 1980s , early representatives were the Porsche 959 and the Ferrari F40 . A term used synonymously is high-performance sports car .
definition
Supercars differ in many ways from everyday or sports cars.
Typical features are:
- high acceleration values (therefore weight savings at the expense of comfort)
- high top speed (therefore streamlined shape)
- high longitudinal and transverse dynamics
- Use of the latest technologies
- very to extremely high purchase price
- very to extremely high maintenance costs
- Production in small numbers (small and very small series)
In general, you can compare many of the properties of super sports cars with those of production sports cars a generation or two later. For example, the high speeds of the Porsche 959 were reached 20 years later by a production car, the Porsche 997 Turbo . A Ferrari F40 was surpassed in top speed by the Ferrari 599 GTB 19 years later .
The maintenance and insurance costs are very high, e.g. B. A “major service repair” of a McLaren F1 costs around 50,000 euros.
What is meant by super sports cars is that they want to demonstrate what was technically feasible in their time; For example, the 16-cylinder engine of the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 brings the car to a top speed of more than 400 km / h. In addition to a few large car companies, a handful of small manufacturers such as Gumpert , Koenigsegg and Pagani also operate in this segment . The vehicles are mostly made by hand and not on the assembly line . The number of cars produced per year is usually around a hundred.
