The Dauer 962 Le Mans ( Le Mans ) is one of the Dauer Sportwagen GmbH produced sports car .

history

Because of the great success of the Porsche 962 racing car, Porsche had an extensive customer program. As with a series vehicle, many components had to be obtained "off the shelf". On this basis, Jochen Dauer built a super sports car, the Dauer 962 LM. In 1991 Jochen Dauer bought five new 962 chassis from Porsche with the numbers 169, 172, 173, 175 and 176. The chassis with the number 169 became the first street version painted in yellow with the new number 001. The first two Racing versions were the Shell sponsored 002 (chassis 173) and the FAT international sponsored 003 (chassis 176). The car was presented for the first time in 1993 at the IAA in Frankfurt. The Sultan of Brunei owns six of the duration 962 LM .

The use at the 24 Hours of Le Mans 1994

In 1994 only GT cars were allowed to compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. As a Group C sports car, the Porsche 962 did not fall into this class. However, only one street-legal model was required to participate in the GT1 class. The start of the Dauer 962 LM Sport was possible because it was approved for road use for the duration of LM.

The car with the serial number 003 was brought to the start with the drivers Yannick Dalmas , Hurley Haywood and Mauro Baldi and was able to achieve the overall victory. The car with the serial number 002 with the drivers Hans-Joachim Stuck , Danny Sullivan and Thierry Boutsen finished in third place.

technology

The duration 962 LM is essentially based on the Porsche 962, but is approved for road traffic. Road approval was only possible after a rear-facing camera was installed, as otherwise the view to the rear would be too restricted. The engine is a 6-cylinder, 4-valve boxer engine with a displacement of 2994 cm³. The cylinders are air-cooled, the cylinder heads are water-cooled. Charging takes place via two turbochargers , each with an intercooler , which achieves an output of 537 kW (730 hp) at 7600 rpm and a torque of 700 Nm at 5000 rpm. The vehicle accelerates from a standstill to 100 km / h in 2.6 seconds and to 200 km / h in 7.3 seconds, and according to the vehicle registration document, the top speed is reached at 402 km / h. 404.6 km / h were measured by an independent party. In Auto Bild Test & Tuning 7/2003 the duration 962 was described as the "fastest street-legal series vehicle in the world".

Overall, due to the existing parts, a total production of approx. 50 pieces was considered possible. About two cars were completed a year. So far there are 13 pieces, the last ones so far probably from 2002. A revised model was announced for 2006.

The ground clearance can be adjusted hydraulically at the push of a button. In normal operation, the car automatically lowers itself a little closer to the road at 80 km / h. In the left door sill there is a small "trunk". A two-piece suitcase set made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic is available, which makes optimal use of the available space.

Versions

  • Duration 962 LM (street version)
  • Duration 962 LM Sport (racing version for Le Mans 1994)

Both versions differ only slightly. The racing version, for example, has a flat underbody, as the Le Mans regulations were changed in January 1994, making the original, negative-pressure underbody construction inadmissible. In order to still have plenty of downforce, a two-sided rear spoiler was attached, the nose lengthened and the rear deepened. Further modifications for the race were stronger brakes and wider tires (front 285/35 ZR 18 instead of 265/35 ZR 18 and rear 345/35 ZR 18 instead of 285/40 ZR 18), and the performance fell to approx . 600 PS (441 kW). In contrast to the racing version, the street version can be equipped with extras such as air conditioning or a DVD player.

The road version has a maximum speed of 402 kilometers per hour , which is registered in the vehicle registration document . In November 1998, 404.6 kilometers per hour were officially measured on the Volkswagen test track near Ehra-Lessien . The approx. 40 km / h more in comparison to the racing version can be explained by more power, lower downforce and the low drag coefficient of 0.31.
