The Ferrari 500 Superfast is a sports car built between 1964 and 1966 by the Italian car manufacturer Ferrari . The 500 Superfast presented at the Geneva Motor Show in February 1964 was the successor to the Ferrari 400 Superamerica .
history
Compared with the previous 400 Superamerica was for the 500 Superfast extended the wheelbase by 50 mm mm to 2650 and the Aerodinamica- Coupe - body refined in detail, starting from the Pininfarina -Stilstudien Superfast III and IV Revision of the body served including their minor extension. the reduction in air resistance , which, in line with the nickname Superfast, in conjunction with a more powerful V - 12 cylinder engine, should lead to a significant increase in top speed.
The five-liter SOHC-V12 of the 500 Superfast occupies a special position in Ferrari history , as it combined the bore and stroke dimensions (88 × 68 mm) and the larger cylinder spacing of the “large” Ferrari V12 designed by Aurelio Lampredi , the was first used in the Ferrari 410 Superamerica , with design features of the "small" Ferrari V12 engine developed by Gioacchino Colombo , as it was used in the Ferrari 250 and Ferrari 330 at the time . The engine with a displacement of 4963 cm³ developed 294 kW (400 hp) at 6500 rpm and accelerated the car to around 280 km / h.
By 1966, 36 units had been built, eight of them with right-hand drive, all of which were coupés.
With the 500 Superfast, the Ferrari development line , which began in 1952 with the 342 America , ended with the particularly expensive and large-capacity special models primarily designed for the USA . The 365 California Spyder , equipped with a smaller engine, temporarily replaced the 500 Superfast from 1966.
