Development history of the Ferrari Mondial 8

Mondial 3.2, manufactured in 1988, from above

Seven years after the 308 GT4 with Bertone body was launched, the Ferrari Mondial 8, designed by Pininfarina, arrived. Traditionalists had never accepted Bertone and believed that Ferrari bodies should only be designed by Pininfarina.

Structurally, the Mondial 8 was based on the two-seater 308 GTB , but was a 2 + 2-seater like the 308 GT4, but with more space. The name Mondial (world) was reminiscent of a Ferrari racing car from the 1950s. To create more space in the interior, the wheelbase was lengthened by ten cm, and the car was also wider than its predecessor.

However, there were two central problems: One related to the somewhat unfavorable proportions of the Mondial (one journalist stated that the Mondial was "too long for its width ..."); the other was that this was Ferrari's first low-emission V8 with fuel injection. At just 157 kW (214 hp), this was also one of the weakest Ferraris, although it was still a fast car compared to most other brands, but beyond 200 km / h it looked quite strained. Surprisingly, it did not sell better than its predecessor, the 308 GT4. Just like its sister models 308 GTB and 308 GTS, the Mondial benefited from the introduction of four-valve technology in 1982 and from the installation of a more powerful engine in 1985. From 1989 the engine was installed lengthways and the model was now called the Mondial t. In the first two years of production, 703 copies were made, mainly the open version of the Mondial.

In the leather-lined interior of the Mondial, there are traditional peculiarities such as the large round instruments and the long, chrome-plated gear stick in the chrome-plated open backdrop.

The bonnet sits between the two “side members” of the roof, which, viewed in profile, successfully conceal the mid-engine layout of the Ferrari.

Mondial means world, and for the world market, the Mondial got a fuel-injected engine that complied with the regulations on pollutant emissions in every country. It had four overhead camshafts and the basic version had an output of 157 kW (214 hp).

Ferrari Mondial Quattrovalvole

This version was built from 1982 (Cabriolet 1984) to 1985 and replaced the Mondial 8. The engine was built with four-valve technology, hence the name Quattrovalvole , and developed 176 kW (240 hp) at a speed of 6400 rpm. Like the coupé, the convertible was also designed as a 2 + 2-seater. The Mondial Quattrovalvole was built in 1144 closed and 629 open copies.

Ferrari Mondial 3.2

When the 308 GTB was upgraded to the 328 GTB, the Mondial followed suit and got a larger engine with 3.2 liters displacement, which delivered 198 kW (270 hp) at 7000 rpm. These models were built from 1985 to 1989 as a coupé and a convertible.

The Ferrari Mondial t was available from model year 1989 both closed and as a convertible. The mid-engine of the 2 + 2-seater was installed lengthways, the gearbox was located transversely behind the differential.

Development history of the Ferrari Mondial t

The new 348 tb was a really new car in every way - engine, chassis and body - for the related 2 + 2 seater Mondial t 3.4 this was only partially the case, but the changes went much further than was generally known . The "t" stands for trasversale (Italian word for transverse) and indicates the transverse gear. The engine, however, was installed lengthways. This construction was previously used in the Ferrari 312T Formula 1 racing car . Thus the Mondial t 3.4 was the first of a new generation of modern V8 Ferraris. All the essential new components of the 348 were used in it before it was even released. In the Mondial t , for example, the new engine and the new gearbox, like the 348, were mounted in a subframe that also carried the new wheel suspension. As a result, the area between the B and C-pillars was stretched, thus also lengthening the side window and changing the side air intakes. Therefore, the "t" looks much more stretched from the side. The 3.4-liter engine itself underwent profound changes; instead of the mechanical K-Jetronic (with separate distributor ignition), it received the modern Motronic 2.5 in duplicate, i.e. a separate injection system per cylinder bank, i.e. control unit, air collector, throttle valve, Air flow meter, distributorless ignition system, catalytic converter, lambda probe and the fuel pump in duplicate. A connection was opened between the air collectors of the two cylinder banks, depending on the speed and load, in order to further improve the torque. The exhaust system was now the same on the right and left. With the exception of the Ferrari F40, it is basically the first clean V8 sports engine from Ferrari with an injection system and solved the problem of power losses in the exhaust-gas-cleaned engines compared to the older ones with carburettors. This was shown by the enormous range of 3000 revs between maximum torque and maximum power. The clutch has two discs. A limited slip differential was standard. For a surcharge, there was an automatic clutch actuation from Valeo for the 5-speed gearbox, the driver only had to change gears.

On the bodywork, the fragile door handles (from the Alfa Spider) were replaced by more robust constructions, which were also painted in the same color as the car. The interior lost some of its extravagance and was now kept very simple and sporty. The well-shaped sports seats were a bit tight. The air conditioning was thermostatically controlled. Due to the different widths of 16-inch wheels and tires at the front and rear, the spare wheel was dropped and replaced with a breakdown spray in the tool case.

The pop-up headlights received lighting units with DE lenses. The bumpers have been redesigned. The new oval tubular frame of the Mondial with the long wheelbase had been completely redesigned to enable the new positioning of the engine and transmission. The car was equipped with power steering and an anti-lock braking system, and there was also a choice of three different settings for the Bilstein coil-over shock absorbers from the driver's seat. Irrespective of the manual setting, the acceleration and yaw sensors were automatically readjusted if necessary, depending on the driving situation.

Since the Mondial was slightly heavier than the 348 tb and also had to transport up to four people, the gear ratio was chosen to be shorter. This was the only difference in the drive and engine, apart from the silencer system.
