The Ferrari 400 Superamerica is a sports car built in two series from 1959 to 1964 by the Italian car manufacturer Ferrari .

The 400 Superamerica presented at the Brussels Motor Show in January 1960 (preceded by the presentation of a prototype in autumn 1959) shared a similar name with its predecessor, the Ferrari 410 Superamerica , but was a comprehensive new development.

Although the box frame and rear rigid axle remained, the four-liter SOHC V12 was not derived from the engine of the 410 designed by Aurelio Lampredi, but rather developed from the three-liter unit of the Ferrari 250 originally designed by Gioacchino Colombo. For the first time with the 400 Superamerica, Ferrari deviated from the practice of choosing the model name according to the displacement of a single cylinder; the 400 should then have been called 330.

The four-liter (type 163, bore × stroke: 77 × 71 mm), equipped with three Weber 42DCW carburettors, drew 250 kW (340 hp) at 7000 rpm from a displacement of 3967 cm³. Series was a four-speed gearbox with overdrive .

The first series had a wheelbase of 2400 to 2440 mm (the factory specifications vary) and was built 23 times. With the exception of two car bodies at Scaglietti (a Spider and a Berlinetta), all of the bodies came from Pinin Farina . Most of the specimens (12) had the so-called Aerodinamica Coupé body with a steeply sloping rear section and a panoramic rear window, the lines of which went back to the Pinin Farina style study Ferrari Superfast II shown in 1960 ; in addition there were the prototype coupé from 1959, 5 convertibles, a 2 + 2-seater special coupé and the style studies Superfast II (later converted to Superfast IV) and Superfast III.

The Series II had a longer wheelbase of 2600 mm. 4 Pinin Farina convertibles and 19 Aerodinamica coupés were created.

The successor to the 400 Superamerica was the Ferrari 500 Superfast developed from the Superfast IV .
