Keith Gerard Mallinson Wood (born January 27, 1972 in Killaloe ) is a former Irish rugby union player who played in the position of hooker . He was the captain of the Irish national team and was active on two tours of the British and Irish Lions .

He got his nickname "Raging Potato" because of his shaved head. Because of the similarity with the character of the same name from the " Addams Family ", he was also called "Uncle Fester". His father Gordon Wood was also a rugby player and came to a total of 29 caps for Ireland.

Keith started his career in Limerick with Garryowen FC . There he was part of the team that won the Irish championship in 1992 and 1994. In 1995 he moved to the Harlequins in England . In the 1999/2000 season he returned to Ireland to play a season for Munster . The team made it to the final of the European Rugby Cup that year, where the Northampton Saints were beaten 8: 9. He then returned to the Harlequins and ended his club career there in 2003.

Wood made his national team debut in 1994 when Ireland faced Australia . During his playing days, he made a total of 58 missions for his home country. He was best known for his unlimited commitment and tough tackles. He was captain of the national team until 2003 and was replaced by Brian O'Driscoll after the World Cup in Australia . In 1997 and 2001 he was also invited to the British and Irish Lions tour and came on five missions.

In 2001 he was named “IRB World Player of the Year” and was the first player to receive this honor. In 2005 he was inducted into the International Rugby Hall of Fame . He holds the record for most attempts by a hooker in rugby history. At the 1999 World Cup , he even managed four attempts in one game when the Irish faced the USA in the preliminary round .
