Killaloe ( Irish : Cill Dalua , German: "Luas Church") is a place in County Clare in Ireland . In 2016 the place had 1,448 inhabitants. It lies on the southern foothills of Lough Derg and extends on the western bank of the Shannon . On the other side of the river is Ballina ( County Tipperary ).

history

The origins of the place are said to go back to a foundation of the holy Molua (or Lua, Dalua), which was originally on an island in the Shannon a little downstream of today's Killaloe Bridge. This settlement was later relocated to the mainland.

In the 10th century the place was a strategic base for Brian Boru , as the ford over the Shannon in the direction of Limerick could be controlled from here . Limerick was held by the Vikings at the time . Brian Boru had his palace Kincora (Irish: Ceann Coradh ) where the Catholic Church is today. Between 1002 and 1014 Brian Boru was the High King of Ireland and Killaloe was Ireland's capital.

St. Flannan's Cathedral was built between 1185 and 1225. In the 14th century the cathedral was destroyed and rebuilt. Inside the cathedral are the Ogham runestone from Killaloe and a Celtic high cross from the 11th or early 12th century. Originally from Kilfenora , the cross was brought to Killaloe in 1821 and placed in the cathedral in 1934.

In the Elizabethan Age, the seat of the county was moved to Ennis and the importance of the place dwindled. The seat of the Catholic diocese of Killaloe is now also in Ennis.

bridge

A wooden bridge over the Shannon was first mentioned in 1013. It was replaced in the 18th century by a stone bridge with 17 arches, which was later shortened to 13 arches.
